D3, has 2 plugs for trailer

Hi, does anybody know what the difference is between the black and white trailer plugs on the back of the D3? They are both 7pin.

IIRC one is the regular trailer lighting socket, the other is for charging caravan batteries, etc

You only need the black one for normal lights, brake controllers etc. Converters easily available at most auto accessory shops.

The white one provides 12V power for battery charging, running fridge etc. Not many people use it (I do), but if you do, you'll need to buy the corresponding plug from LR and custom wire it.

Or provide and wire your own Anderson connection or similar.

ok, so if its there to charge caravan acc's etc, dose it charge all the time or part time from the alternator when the engine isnt under load? (the reason why redarch's dont work on D4's?)

I currently use the white socket for charging my trailer. I pulled apart a standard 7pin plug and "modified" it to fit the white socket.

From memory there is a pin with a constant 12V supply to it, and a pin with an accessories supply (on when the key is in accessories position). This is the supply that I am using.

My plan is to very soon fit a traxide dual battery system to the car with the anderson plug accessory to plug the trailer into. I think this is a far better solution.

Does anybody know if there is a diagram of the pin layout?

My caravan has the wide-plug, and that includes a full-time 12V pin, so I should be able to hack something together.

If not I will just get my trusty light-bulb out and test the pins :)

The black plug is a seven pin but you only use five of these, so I hooked up a constant 12v to one and the other to elec breaks, this way you are only pluging in one plug not two.

Can someone using the white socket please clarify something for me:

Is the power coming from the white socket regulated? So, can I simply connect the power to my battery and it will charge or does it need to go white plug --> regulator --> Battery?

It is just a straight power supply from the battery/alternator of the car (same supply which charges the main battery). I do not imagine that the cable is very large, so there is probably a bit of voltage drop, meaning that it is not really ideal for charging trailer batteries, however it does work OK. From memory I think it is fused at 10A. A quality charge circuit is usually fused at 30A with at least 10mm2 cable.
