I've just found out my transmission needs to be replaced ($ yikes!!) The vehicle shudders when accellerating up hill at around 2000rpm. I have been told this is a common problem which developes in vehicles used for towing and can be prevented if the trans is serviced regularly (oil and filter change) eg 30k km, though Land Rover dont say anything in their manual. Has anyone else heard of this problem?

What model of vehicle is it??? as it might not be all that bad,could be one of many things, Unis,donuts,bent tailshafts,worn output bearings, even dead engine mounts,etc.
I have a freind that had a nice 2door Range Rover a few years ago, it had a clonk in the transmission on take off, he was not mehanically knowledgable,went to "Landrover Specialist" new transmission mate $1800+ he came to me asking what he could do to keep it going for a bit, I slid underneath, in doing so, grabbed the tailshaft,it moved sideways :eek:,gave it a good check, badly worn universal, then had him put it in gear and slowly let the clutch out--- worn "A:frame ball joint :( sent him to another trusted landrover workshop and a couple of hundred dollars later new ball joint & 2 unis all good,so GET A SECOND OPINION, ;)

Those ZF gearboxes should be fairly bullet proof - it could be something else like a drive shaft that has a worn coupling or something like that.
I agree that it would be worth your while to get a 2nd opinion.
If you are doing a lot of towing, get the gearbox serviced periodically, because it ain't "sealed for life" :p
I did find a thread on a couple of folks who had issues with their gearboxes, and I know personally of a friend who had his auto gearbox replaced under warranty.

Maybe these ZF gearboxes aren't as bullet proof as the old 4 speed ones used on the DII.... :(
