Went looking on the Nvidea website tonight(always a happy eye opener),,
clicked on this link
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 560 Ti (http://www.nvidia.co.uk/object/product-geforce-gtx-560ti-uk.html)
to have a look at a brand new near-the-top-but-not-quite video card.
silly me read the spiel-
THREE TIMES the power of the previous generation of card!
and that poor excuse for a video card?
the 8800 GT.
just like MY 8800 GT
sad, very sad,,:(

Was reading in the Austraian today about CSIRO's new s/comp running minimal CPU's (only to control) and masses of gpu's for raw processing grunt due to the better speed, for the applications they are putting through it. Not suitable for everything but massively cheaper.

My laptop runs a Radeon 5870HD which is pretty fast and plays all the modern games at pretty good frame rates but I always want more so I built up a $2700 gaming rig on line using the fastest Nvidia card available and all the bells and whistles to ensure gaming bliss.
When I asked SHMBO if I can spend the money on this new beast I got a flat out NO. Not a maybe, not a pause whilst she contemplated the request, just a no.
I wonder if I asked can I spend $2700 on computer shoes for her I would get a different answer;)

Mmm think the issue here is not that she said NO its more the fact you ASKED!!! I find it sooo much easier NOT to ask and put up with being told later I'm just sooo disobedient!.... :D

Wellllll, I have been threatened before, and the most 'memorable' time was after we'd had a stallion gelded.
I'll leave the threat to your imagination.........:o
As a neighbour of mine says..

Laptop is a G73JH-A1 and is pretty sweet, especially after repasting the GPU as the heatsink paste asus used dried out after 6 months. Plays mosts games like Metro 2033, Black ops etc on medium to very high settings and 1920x1080 getting 30-100 fps.
The desktop gaming rig has jumped up a bit in price to about $4,222.
-cooler master case with low noise fans
-1200W silent SLi psu
-gigbyte GA-X58A-UD3R sata 3 usb3 MB
-i7-970 six core 3.20Ghz cpu,
-corsair water cooling
-2 x geforce GTX 580 1536MB SLi
-12 gig corsair DDR3 tripe channel 1600Mhz ram
-windows 64 pro
-24" led monitor
With 3dmark vantage dx10 the rig should get a ridiculous score of 38,600.
mmmmmm........just need to pick $4k off the money tree that was heavily pruned last year:(

Computer fun!
Fortunately for me, I have a degree in micro-computer technology and I've always built my own computers.
Like whast you're doing Pedro, I always just rock up to my favourite computer shop and buy everything over the counter.
I guess it doesn't happen too much these days as they always look at me strangely when I spout out what I want off the top of my head. I'm usually met with "And when would you like to pick up the machine?" followed by another strange look when I tell them that I'm taking it home to build it myself.
The main advantage of this is that I can source my parts from all over at cheap rates, or recycle old parts when possible and build an awesome machine for around $600. Bargain.
I often wonder about the qualifications of some people in computer shops after one tried to convince me that I needed to bring in my PC for a new motherboard after I went there to collect a new power box when the old one fried itself.
My machine has some of the following:
Windoze 7
AMD Athlon X2 dual core processor
4gig RAM
4 terrabytes HDD space
GeForce 9800GT
Dual 20" monitors
It goes pretty hard! fun.... I guess I built this one about 3 years ago now, with some minor upgrades here and there. It's probably due for some new RAM, CPU, and video card at some stage. I'll probably worry about it when it dies, like I usually do.
