Gday all, just received my issue of 4wd action mag., a great article on Gavin Ger's 2010 defender. I want one like that! Gavin graciously gives some credit to AULRO members for input to the modifications done, and this is the first time since I have been reading the mag. that Land Rover has had such a positive wrap. Good to see!! [bigsmile] :twobeers:

yeah good to see. well done Gav

BTW i know that there is a lot of people on here that hate the mag and say that they are biased on Datsuns and Toyetas but in just about every issue there is a defender in some form. Mostly in adds  seriously they had a puma for a long term test vehicle didnt they? And there is heaps of camping touring articles that seem to have a defa in the fotos

Yes, Grover, I have also had some dealings with ARB, and one of the franchises here has a d2 owner on staff, not only on staff, but as a manager of some kind, [cant remember, see spare tyre cover] and I have someone who understands rovers to talk to. Could the Empire be striking back? [and no, I was born here ] Bob.

It may be possible to scan from the mag. to the computer, but I'm not sure about copyright laws. Anyone know? Bob

The photos remain the interlectual property of the the person or company that took them. If the photos were taken by the owner of the vehicle, then chances are he or she would not mind them being reproduced here, but technically you would need his or her permission. If the mag took the photos, then if you read the fine print inside the front cover or somewhere similar, it will probably state that written permission is required before reproducing them. A quick email to the ed would probably yield a positive result. I have done this before when I wanted to reproduce some photos from a mag in a newsletter - as long as you ask, they usually have no problems.

I might have to pull it out of the plastic and read it then. My sis got me a subscription for xmas so its sitting there ready to read, now I have some motivation.

Always good to see the Land Rovers making an appearance in the mags.

Gavins Defender looks absolutely awesome ! A well engineered & thought out rig.

Theres also a section on buying second hand and low and behold a Defender is also featured. (owned by someone at Opposite Lock Southside) ...shame they put some of the editorial under the Triton also featured. :(

Good to see some coverage on LRs this month ...other than just in the Ads !

Yeah, it's just a pity that last month they had a section on the best engines and the writers didn't mention anything from LR, but went for the engines they'd grown up with (slow old Toyotas and Nissans), yet this month they say the TD5 is one of the best engines ever. I guess that's just different points of view of their writers.

Maybe thats one of the reasons it's not popular?.With magazines the single most important thing is to not talk BS because the people who read it generally know allot about the vehicles involved and once the BS starts it looses credibility. Pat

Strange that.As I was reading a few months ago, where they were recommending that anyone considering a LandRover to buy a v8 as the TD5 was one of the most unreliable motors around.Funny how the wheel turns, maybe written by a different journo though!!!

Probably shows that most of them have never owned a Land Rover and are only repeating what they've been told by other ToyoNissan owners.

In the "best diesels" article they only really had the toy/datsun 4's and 4.2 diesels. They didn't even hint at all the other toy diesels, 2.4, 2.8, 3 (hilux).

They DID briefly mention the 300tdi in a positive light, but said parts availability was limited in the outback. I was about to arc up, but seriously, its a fair comment. I had a water pump and fuel lift pump fail, and had to get parts from Alice to fix. If it was a toy/datsun then you could most likely go to any old outback junk yard and get the parts you need.

The "journalism" in that mag is pretty **** poor and very poorly researched. The DVD's, custom 4wds, travel features, ads and the pretty pictures are good, but 90% of the words is just filler crap.

In a CV special they said landrovers didn't have CV's, they had unis................ Very well researched.........

<snip> In a CV special they said landrovers didn't have CV's, they had unis................ Very well researched.........

And they keep insisting that Defenders/Disco I & II's have auto locking hubs........ Every time I think about getting a subscription again, (as I do like the DVD's), I read something like that. :(

Cheers,

Tim

E-mailed Shaun Whale, Deputy Publisher [ leisure], 4wd action mag., for permission to place photos on AULRO site. Permission was given, as long as I credited the mag [fair enough].I mentioned the lack of L.R. articles, his reply was
"A word on the Land Rover shortage. It's not that we dont want to run them, it's just that we struggle to find modified ones to run in our magazines . I think it's hard to beat the looks of a modified Defender[ or Disco for that matter] and I'm sure you'll agree! It's just a matter of finding them, I'm sure there are a few out there ".

Considering the mag. seems heavily dependant on ARB, TJM, for ads. etc. I suppose I can understand the need for modified vehicles. I was tempted to say the average off the floor L.R. will match it with most of the modified Toyotas and Nissans , but thought better of it! :D I guess the ball is in our court if we want to raise the profile of L.R. in the mag. It's the one with " 10 best used tourers" on the cover. One is a defender, and this is their wrap on 2nd hand defenders - " best pick 2003 defender 110 extreme-- the 5 cylinder direct injection td5 is one of the best turbo-diesel engines available on the used market":Thump:not long ago they were bagging it! The writer was from opposite lock, Sydney Bob

No, it's the latest issue - just out. Subscribers get it first.

Re. LRs, they aren't looking very hard if they can't find them. How many LR clubs are there around the place - lots.

Re. availability of 300tdi or other LR parts, they're basically the same as for any other make - if you break down in the bush the bits get flown in overnight, usually from a capital centre supplier. Same for Toyota, Nissan etc. This 'no parts available' argument is just lazy rubbish.

They are actively looking for LR's, and if you actually want to get into the mag just shoot them an email. As Bob said the balls in our court if we feel under represented. Of course they will always feature lots more toys/datsuns as there are probably 10:1 of them to us. Probably 10:1 more show offs too :)

I have/had a very out of date "shed" on their forum/website (haven't logged in for well over a year), and they emailed me a while ago asking about my car and what mods it had, they wanted to run that. I emailed back when I am ready (after I make rear bar) I will be happy to put it in, hopefully on the DVD too :D

PS Broke down in Finke, not overly easy to organise delivery of parts to that hole overnight, but yes could have been done.... Luckily managed to patch up lift pump with quiksteel. The aboriginal machinery graveyards can be a gold mine. When the tiniest thing breaks in those communities it just gets chucked out, and replaced courtesy of tax payers. They had mig welders, whackers, etc etc just sitting there rotting, almost worth taking a trailer on your next outback trip haha.

G'day all, yep the balls in your court as they say, we are on the hunt for another defender and would like to shoot it early next week, at this time I could organise a shoot in QLD, VIC or NSW for this one, but even if you are in another state and you think yours is magazine worthy, please forward me the details.

Now is the time to shine, email me at jason@4wdaction.com.au , if you know of anyone that hasn't been on here for awhile or any other 4WD out there that may not get this message, can you get there attention and we could feature it.

Come on show me what Defenders you have out there and email me as soon as possible to jason@4wdaction.com.au

Maybe Jason you should take your blinkers off and realise there is more to the world than Toyota's and Nissans and we might be a bit more accomodating. The 10 best tourers, ever heard of the 2002/2004 Td6 Range Rover?,the BEST TD wagon sold in Oz,I know I owned one,the latest greatest 200 series is no improvement. And please drop the not made for Australian conditions, you can't buy parts for them etc etc,I live in outback Oz and have owned both Toyota's and Land Rovers and I can tell you it's the opposite.Publish facts not ''my mate said'',''the bloke down the pub told me'' and you might get some interest. I had some problems in Weipa a couple of years ago and the bits were flown in overnight from Cairns, so you can't complain about that.
Meanwhile, a bloke with a broken Jeep Wrangler suspension had been there for four days...
And the mechanic told me Toyota CVs were only lasting six months on the local corrugations.
Also, I'm really sick of reading that Toyota built the Snowy Mountains scheme when the truth is the Landys started arriving in 1950 and hundreds were used to do most of the tough pioneering work long before the first Toyota arrived eight years later - and it didn't even have low range!

Mate, I'm here chasing down a defender for our mags, I think the blinkers are off, actually mine were never on.

I've got no problem running any make or model 4WD within out mags.
Australian 4WD Action Magazine even has a defender on the cover and i'm chasing more defenders, discos and other makes all the time.

So if you would like to see your pride and joy Landrover's which ever model in our mags please send them into me at jason@4wdaction.com.au

I can't put them in, if no one repies
