I just had a look at the Steinbauer website . For $1967 you can purchase their plug'n play module and get a 20kw gain. Seems a fair bit to pay for just shy of a 10% increase. Has any one fitted one of these modules? Does anyone offer better for the money?

Let me think... DP chip is about $1300, Tombie about $1200, LRA (Les Richmond Automotive in Melbourne) about $750 (exchange ecu, reflashed).
Just about everyone can offer as much if not more increase in power (Kw) but some do better with Torque (Nm) which is far more important imho.
Almost $2k is a bit rich I would think.

Td5 from me (Tombie) is $440 for flashable ecus.
Exchange (early units) $570
Kelvin on here does flashable for the same as me.

There's your answer.
I sent mine to TRS in Adelaide on a Saturday afternoon by air freight and so they had it Monday. They upgraded my own ECU and Express Posted it back to me and I had it on the Wednesday.

Just wondering- how does the upgraded ECU gain 20kw? Does the engine run hotter, use more fuel etc? Any other side affects. I would love another 20kw for my td5 but not sure how this might affect engine life. Understanding how it works would help me make a decision.... Thanks

Do a search on the forum for Steinbauer. At least one member has not been impressed with his upgrade.

Tombie will correct me if I am wrong, but as no one else has answered yet I will. It changes the fuel mapping (fuel / air). As a result you will get higher exhaust gas temps. If doing the upgrade it is advisable to get a larger intercooler and a bigger exhaust or at least have the centre muffler removed to allow better flow. It is also a good idea to fit and EGT pyrometer & gauge to keep an eye on temps. Over all cost is about the same as the Steinbauer on its own, but you will have the best system and will get a lot more than a 20kw increase if you want.

G'day all,
Tombie remapped the ECU on my 2004 130, took only a few days for the turn around from removing to plugging back in. I have also put on taller MT's, added a snorkel, removed the hyclone, replaced the expansion joint under the exhaust manifold, bypassed the EBR Valve and chopped out the first muffler.
The truck is so much better off the mark, even with the taller tyres, and can cruise at 110kmh with less strain all around. But the single most noticeable improvement was the re-map. In addition Tombie was straight forward, totally approachable and I fully recommend his work.

P.S. Tombie gave me a Stage 1 flash......I wonder what a 2 or 3 could do?

That was probably what did the trick. :D:D:D

From the dark side the Steinbauer has not proven popular as only increases the injection Duty... They're designed to drop out on long hard acceleration to protect EGT's.
Remap is most popular followed buy Interceptor ECU's that increase the rail pressure + Boost.

Even with the many threads that have addressed this topic I always manage to learn something new about these upgrades;)
Craig's explanation was good stuff:)
I've had Tombie's Magic done on my Defender and the centre muffler replaced by a Vortex thing but no intercooler upgrade, EGT gauge nor a bigger exhaust.
The intercooler upgrade has concerned me for a while and I am investigating the various upgrades, so please feel free to add comments about various intercoolers:)
As for the upgrade. I had the unit flashed at 60K and now have 120K on the clock. Three trips pulling my boat to the NT and another trip across the Ann Beadell Highway and I still wear the biggest grin as I'm getting into the vehicle. I frequently tow the boat up the mountains from Albury to Dartmouth Dam and that is where the upgrade has paid for itself many times over. Instead of continually searching for a lower gear the vehicle does it easily.
Just do it:D:D:D The vehicle accelerates like it should, it pulls the boat (dual axle trailer - not a floating yacht but a big bigger than an average punt) without any trouble whatsoever and it has no problem in the high country, let me share.
I drove the vehicle from Albury to Whyalla for Tombie to do his stuff - I'll never forget the trip home:eek::eek::eek: Wow
Lastly, you WILL use more fuel because you WILL put the right foot down.

I'm with Barra,I'll be driving my Puma back to NSW at Xmas via the GCR but on the way back I'll be going via the coast so Tombie can do his stuff on it. Pat
