View Full Version : 130 gear ratio for 33" tyres

I notice since buying the 130 that it's a bit more sluggish off the mark than the 110, particularly up hills. More so when I put the 33" tyres on than the 31.5" tyres.

I'm not particularly worried about it - I'm no Michael Schumacher. However, I was wondering if it's something I should be worried about, particularly the gear ratio.

Am I paranoid, or is it worth doing something about it?

PS - both the 130 and 110 are mid-90s 300Tdi models.

Check your air filters? did the 110 have an upgraded intercooler or a larger exhaust? was the injector pump tweeked a bit more on the 110? Don't forget a GVM difference of 3050kg compared to the 130 being 3500kg.

I have an uprated intercooler in my 130, bought a few years ago from "jase" on this forum, the injector has been tweeked and it goes like a rocket...

GVM isn't the issue here- both a fairly empty when he's having the isssue he mentioned.

The "tweak" could certainly be a factor.

The 33' tyres have given you around 10% taller gearing (i.e. 10% less oomph getting off the line). The plus being around 10% less revs at any given speed. Nothing to worry about if all is running OK. If you want the power upped there are plenty of simple tuning tricks to get a little more, however, the more you spend the more you get but you could end up spending a lot more to get not much more. The cheapest and simplest way to get a little bit more out of a 300tdi is to remove the (1st) muffler and just have a straight through pipe to the rear muffler (reasonator), but might be open to rego problems.

there is an adjustment on the fuel pump for extra fuel when off boost i.e. taking off, if you dont want to do the full tweak than its the adjustment of the screw uder the cap on the diapham.....pretty sure, will have to check my instruction

it should help to get rolling in first

The best tweak would be to fit an isuzu :p

Tho have a look see if you are getting full throttle at the pump with the cable and that it taught at idle ( no slack) ive seen this mod fix slugish TDI 300's..

Have you thought about putting LPG on it? I have a few friends running 300tdi's on gas and they keep my 4.4V8 honest.
