Heading off to Bribie tomorrow. It's only the second time I've driven on the beach there. Last time was just before Xmas and at at low tide.

Just a couple of quick questions, if anybody knows:

Is the middle track back on line, as it was closed before Xmas?

Can you drive up Bribie beach at high tide, which is at 10:30am tomorrow?

Thanks for any help.

Cheers,

Kev.

Here's what the QPWS say:

Access to Ocean Beach campsites via Eastern beach only. Gallagher Point Road and campground closed. Northern (inland) Access track closed north of Poverty to all traffic until Friday 25.02.2011. The coastal lagoons are also now over-flowing across the beach, which combined with high tides is making beach travel difficult. QPWS recommends that visitors take extra care to avoid washouts, and only drive along the beach one hour either side of low tide.

I'm sure someone has more local experience though. QPWS seem to side caution in their advice.

Cheers mate, I read the websites before but as these were the same or close to the same warning before xmas, I thought that I'd ask.

And to your point, yes they do err on the side of caution, as the flooding lagoons were easy to traverse the last time I was there. There are threads going back to 2008 saying the Lagoons are impassible.....so was confused....LOL...., thinking they may not refresh them very often.

We've also had a fair bit of 'weather' since I was last there.

So was hoping somebody may have been there lately.

Thanks,

Kev.

Bribie beach and the lagoons can be very deceptive, I have seen more than a few vehicles go swimming in the lagoon washouts when the banks have collasped under them which often led to a very expensive recovery usually by council heavy front end loader:(:( any advise by QPWS should be heeded ;)

Was there last week, The northern access road was still closed according to signs. The beach is normally drivable at high tide with a bit more effort. However I have seen that beach change week to week and even day to day. It is not often you can't do it at high tide.
The lagoons are now open, I would not be game to do them at high tide so they may restrict your travels to the first couple of km's.

Now inspired to head up myself, so if you see a SVX come say hi.
Without rooftop tent now.

Beach doesn't look like you can do it at high tide today if the overnight mark is anything to go by.

The crossing at second lagoon is more than I want to do.

A Pajero just came through quite easily but put more salt water through car than I would care for.

Cheers mate, now that's what I call up to date intel. :)

I had no intentions of ignoring any advice, was just trying to gauge what the conditions are like lately as there has been a lot of adverse weather since I was there last.

We've fixed the high tide issue by sleeping in....family decision LOL!!!

We're going to leave at 10'ish, should get us there just after 11:15 or so.....by the time I air down and get on the sand, things should be starting to improve.

Stornoway Grey D4....I'll look out for your rig....which is a very good looking truck I might add.

Thanks again,

Cheers,

Kev.

Thanks mate, wouldn't ignore the advice in any circumstances, was just looking for the most recent reports...especially with all the bad weather we have had of late.

I'm really not in the mood to lose my D4....LOL

Thanks.

Enjoy your day up there Kev, sadly work commitments mean I am now home so won't see you up there.
Just as I was leaving someone came through the lagoon, about thigh deep and running very fast.
A hilux, he actually got through very easily and then turned around to take a photo of what he just went through. 4X4's can be very capable but the consequences can be expensive if it turns pear shape.

Thanks Mate,

Just got back, had a great day. The stiff breeze masked how hot it actually was.

I looked out for you, shame you couldn't make it.

I saw what you mean't by the lagoon...it was pretty full and the outflow was running really hard.

:( I have to shamefully admit that I chickened out crossing...for a few minutes. Had there been another vehicle with me, and not been a crowd of 30 thousand and the constant risk of running over somebody mid-crossing...I would have gone for it, as i've done a fair few crossing in the D4 before.

Then a group lead by a Pootrol turned up. They went for it and made it pretty easily. People in the water then started being a bit more aware of the vehicles.

I then crossed and it was pretty easy.

However, there was so much current, that had you been forced to stop due to a kid in the water, I recon you'd get in trouble pretty quickly.

Great day though.

:)

At least with today's Brisbane weather, there was no risk of salt being left on the truck....:)

Crossed more water on the roads than I did on Bribie....

Yeah that was me.

As you can see it was pretty tame by then...thus the fact that I was poodling through.

What were you driving?

Did you see the crossing earlier?

Very Funny....maybe I didn't see it cause it was camouflaged....:)

Looked out for LRs all day.

One blue Defender earlier in the day, next to this crossing and another white one passing in the opposite direction further up the beach.

Also one old green Rangie....

That's all I saw....

Yeah I did answer..read my post..did any of the vehicles listed that I saw include a Perentie or Freelander?.....excuse my ignorance but we're talking camo'ed military 110 aren't we....4 wheel or 6 wheel...?

At that point I was eyeballing kids in the water as I crossed, turned, stopped picked up my own....

Missed him completely.

We headed up in the arvo, I checked the tides and it was down to 0.1m at 4PM and the place was like a 8 lane highway. We were in the 110 but tucked behind a fallen tree for shade so that's probably why you didn't see us. We cooked a chicken, drank some wine and enjoyed the view. It was a great afternoon.

It was very easy driving too, you could have got a Commodore onto the beach I reckon.

Yeah, the driving was very easy apart from the water crossing straight after high tide. I've got a good shot of the Disco ploughing through it earlier in the day. It looks more spectacular than it actually was, it's just that you had to give it a bit of welly, cause the flow was really hard and going too slow or stopping could have been really bad. We saw a cruiser get stuck for exactly that reason....tried to cross too slowly and the current started burying his wheels. He was on the ball though and backed straight back out. Applied the pedal next time and went through no worries. :)

The sand at the camp site entries was still a bit of a hazard though.....pretty soft. I saw another cruiser doing exactly what I did before Xmas....stopped just before the dune to check out the entrance, and then couldn't get up the dune....bogged straight away. Bit more of a run up and it's easy.

It was probably fortuitous for him though...it was site 12 & 13 (I think?). I went in for a look at one stage, it was really soft and very tight....had to do a 30 point turn to get back out. If he'd of got in with his cruiser, he'd of had to try to back back out...and probably would have kept getting bogged......which would have been funny....:p

We were just leaving when you snapped the shot.

Sounds like a great way to spend the late afternoon. Glad you enjoyed.

Cheers,

Kev.

Pulled rank on Friday, left the boys to it and shot up to Bribie with the family for weekend of camping. Stayed at Camp 3 for a change this time. Good for one family tent with reasonable shade, not too back from the dune and well protected. Bit of a struggle turning the 130 around after the tent went up though, lucky those bollards are only in sand.
But how nice is that place. Only an hour from Brissie which is it's best and worst point. Caught Sole, Whiting, Flathead, and Dart...and I don't know much about fishing.

Kids love the surf, few wines on the dune, fresh air porta poti if you like that kind of thing, just magic.

Sounds like a great weekend mate.

Only thing that puts me off is the 'No Fires' rule.....it ain't camping if you don't have a fire...LOL!!!

Was the inland track open?

Yep living in the redneck state of Qld, no fires anywhere in NP unfortunately, unless you try and make one in one of those pathetic buckled and buggered excuses of a BBQ's parks supply. Got to go private or to NSW for a decent fire.
Not sure about the inland track, the NP's web site said it was open again.

I once drove to Girraween NP with a trailer full of camping gear and tons of wood. This was pre-LR days and had a VT Bombador.....which was struggling with the weight....and chewed fuel like there was no tomorrow.

I get there and that afternoon the Rangers declared a total fire ban.....wasn't a happy camper....:(

Hi All,

I went to Bribie for the first time in Jan last year...Norfolk Creek/Second Lagoon was a raging torrent just after high tide.

I crossed a while afterwards (high tide), and the required speed, due to the undertow had water pouring over my bonnet.

I got to the other side pretty easily but the LC behind me employed a 'usually safer' lower speed and got bogged. Fortunately he found reverse real fast!

I was unscathed at the other side and then realised that my number plate was looking a tad unhealthy....fortunately didn't lose it. Note to all, Dealers only use 2 screws...LOL!!!!

Anyway, went back to Bribie last weekend with families in tow...mate has a Prado. The middle track is open now....great drive. Lot's of deep soft sand and huge holes but the 19" Scorpions cruised along with no issue at 20 PSI. Laughed watching my mate in my rear view, bouncing like a bronco..... At least he made it through, unlike the new Paj we passed, bogged to the axles.....Mates on hand, Maxtrax and Snatch Strap deployed....no need to stop. Waved and moved on.

Wish I could have taken a photo though....the ****ed off Dad and mates and the sullen faces of the kids would have looked great next to the Mitsu catch cry...."Love that car"!!!!

Couldn't believe it when I drove down the main beach.....Norfolk Creek no longer breaches the beach. There was no evidence of flow at all.

Erosion further up the beach, near the Forts, is pretty bad. Don't know how long they will last.

Was passed by a Gold (I think) D4, exchanged waves....:D

Cheers,

Kev.
