hi all, whats the best way to clean those mags. must admit have let them go for some months/yrs so the build up of brake dust is all over, cleaned with water blaster cleaned but not completely, used spray of degreaser that didnt do it either really. thinking may need a wire brush on a drill to clean up but what liquid should i use that will clean up like new. many thanks ;)

Use any "mag wheel" cleaner - do not use a wire brush as "mag" wheels these days are in fact painted and will the wire brush will wreck the finish.

Sure I read a post a year or so ago about someone who used cold tea..
Am going to try it on the D3 rims so will let you know.

Gday All,
I read of this awhile back but never tried it, so after seeing the rims on the D3 today thought i'd give it a try

What did I use, well there was no scrubbing, no hard work, and did all 4 rims in about 10 mins...
Cold Tea...I put 4 tea bags in about 4ltrs of water, had a coffee whilst they diffused, and used and old chux to wipe the rims..I never even hosed them first, only when I finished..
It would be the easiest rim cleaning i've ever done..
Give it a try..
Cheers Ean

I must try that on ours.
Ean, I thought the wheels / tyres would have been red by now - or is the wet keeping you at home.

Ean, did you try cleaning one wheel with just water and a Chux? A comparison test so to speak.

Gday Erich,
No between the weather and the boat, been pretty much town only for me..Am hoping to get the D3 and the camper into either litchfield or kakadu next weekend, but with about 1000mm of rain in the last week not sure how successful we will be..
Hope all is well down your way..
Cheers Ean

I did and it would come clean in the end, but the cold tea seemed to clean them with 1 wipe, no rubbing, so not sure why, guess maybe the tannins in the tea or something..

That’s remarkable. The easiest wheel clean ever. We used a Chux and a paint brush around the wheel nuts.
Ours won't stay clean for long as we have a 1/2 km gravel driveway.

There is a thread current on this on the General Chat page, tea bags, water and a chux was all that was needed. Check it out.
Cheers,

Yeah I do the tea thing too. When I first heard of it I must say that I thought it was BS. But that brake dust (esp. fronts) was always so hard to get off so I gave it a go. Result was amazing & I have been doing it since.

For those of you who have dogs, not alloy ones:eek::p, rinsing a dog after a wash using a couple of tea bags in the water also freshens them up ...and they love it!!:D:D

When I cleaned mine I took them off, scrubbed them clean with CT12 (?) them when dry, a lot of wax.

And welcome ;)
Must try the tea thing myself. Not a big user of tea bags, being of pommy extraction. Always a tea pot man with real leaves, but probably using the leftovers would work the same.

I must admit I have excellent results with an old paintbrush and the water/detergent remaining in the bucket after I've finished washing the car.

My factory mags have become slightly pitted over time from brake dust etc. and I now try to wash them down weekly to stop it getting worse. I don't think there is any product that will fix the pitting. I'm told they can be repolished--has anybody done this? Have also tried some of those brake dust repellant/protector products, they don't work.
From what I see, for some reason all european cars seem to have more brake dust issues than Japanese & Korean vehicles.
