View Full Version : New Windscreen

I have looked back through older posts and have noticed people having issues with non-genuine windscreens being fiited.
I have a stone chip and crack around the size of a 50c piece and require a new screen.
Can anyone give me some directions on where to get genuine glass from and a possible price.
I have been quoted around $740 fitted for non-genuine by Obrien Glass.

I have spoken to my insurance company "Allianz" and I have full windscreen cover with no excess and as a genuine screen is currently fitted I can request a genuine screen for the replacement.
So the claim has been organised with Obrien and I am waiting on a call back to organise a time depending on when they can get the genuine glass I guess.
No idea on how much a genuine screen will cost them but luckily the insurance is paying.
I need to take it in to them though for the work, as bonnet removal etc. is required.

I have had my Windscreen replaced twice under Insurance and in both cases the bonnet was never removed. In fact both times they came and did the repair at my place. You should ask if they can do the same.

Big difference in glass quality. You can scrub a genuine screen with scotchbrite to get the bugs off but do it with an aftermarket one and it will scratch...been there:angel:, still looking through scratches;).

As a matter of interest, what proof does the insurance company require of windscreen breakage in order for them to pay for a replacement? How bad does the break have to be.
I've never had one replaced but mine does have a barely perceptible crack through the driver's side vison area.

My windscreen had two very minor stone chips. My Insurer directed me to their approved repairer to be fixed. They had a quick look and said we will just replace the whole thing. Probably more $$ in their pocket from the Insurance Company than a stone chip repair.

Im now on my 4th screen in this car , and can def say 100% remove the bonnet as it makes it much easier to remove the intake plenum assy etc without breaking it.
Bonnet takes less than 5 mins to remove and weighs nothing tbh.
Also make sure they order a NEW top finisher seal, it MUST be replaced when a new srceen is fitted, "some" fitters / companies witll try to get away with not doing it, but it should be renewed and fitted to the new glass BEFORE it goes into the vehicle.

When I spoke to the repairer I was informed that a chip less than the size of a 5c piece on the drivers side can be repaired as long as not in the direct line of vision. A chip less than a $1 coin on the passenger side can be fixed.
Anything over this and a new windscreen is in order. With mine, once you include the cracks coming out from the chip you are around the size of a 50c coin.

I will definetely be talking to the repairer before hand to find out exactly what they are going to do, I will also ask for reciepts for parts purchased etc. for my records.

I've had a couple of windscreens fitted to my disco all done by the same obriens outlet and all have leaked on first attempt. The first time it was leaking at top left corner which soaked my headliner (they fixed it with black goo), the second screen leaked from centre at bottom, it would spit water at you as you drove, it also had a bad haze appearance which made for dangerous driving out in the bush on sunny days. They replaced the last screen with a different brand, so far so good but I don't think they have replaced any seals at any time and there is always glass fragments all over the dash. I myself have never been impressed with obriens work quality on both my disco and company cars at various locations.
Cheers Matt

New genuine windscreen has arrived and will be fitted on Monday, they also ordered all of the genuine seals to go with the screen.
Hopefully they do a good job and I dont have the issues other have had.

Hi CJT,
A common issue after windscreen replacement on the D2 is that the lower plastic trim panel is unlikely to sit snugly over the bottom of the glass. It is highly likely that water will run down the glass and then go under this plastic trim, into the top section of the engine bay just under the windscreen. For the most part this isn't really a problem because the water then runs down to the edges of this area and drains away.
What can happen though, is that water can run into the aircon/heating duct which comes up under the windscreen on the passenger side. Water can run down the under side of the plastic trim and straight into the duct (nice design work LR - genius). If you stick your hand up there somewhere under where the passenger side wiper sits you can feel where it is. This can also be an issue on the driver's side in the rare event that the bolts holding the wiper motor have come loose.
This is something you could warn the windscreen fitter about when you drop the car off, before the new glass is fitted.
Cheers
Martin

So far, so good.
Well I only lost my AULRO sticker and my Bribie Island National Park Permit. All other permits etc. where able to be transfered.
The other big thing is how clear it is. I did not realise how many little marks where on the old screen.
Couple of little things though, the drivers side A-Pillar outer panel cracked and was replaced, unfortunately LR dont have any gloss black ones anymore, only matt.
The plastic panel under the screen and wipers is broken, but that has always been.
Otherwise it all looks good, the repairer already knew of all the issues I asked about (thanks to the forum information) and the work is guaranteed.
