View Full Version : 6x6 110 Pics and info Wanted

Ok, i've been scouring the net and the forums for what I can find, but I wanted to ask for more ;)
I'm putting together a page about civilian 6x6 land rover 110 vehicles that were built as a part of REMLR, being as they were developed hand in hand. As there was probably less than 100 left, I might keep a list as well, btu I wanted to collect what photos are out there, and any info on users, current owners etc etc.
So if you have anything that could help, please let me know :)

From an au ebay ad, the crane was for sale not the vehicle. No other information recorded or remembered.

I dare say that a lot of information will be along fairly soon. The only information I have comes from working on a couple of the civilian versions,re transfercase issues stemming from the taper roller intermediate gear conversion. My overall impression from test drives and from an engineering perspective is that they were a fairly ordinary piece of kit, and not a real crosscountry vehicle.

I could scan the Overlander road test of the civvy sixby 110 if required.

My 110 owners manual has the 6x6 specs. Not sure if you already have that?
Otherwise I can scan.

isuzutoo-eh, was that unit in Australia? Looks a it different, but maybe it's just the tyres and rims. I don't have that review, I would love that, thankyou.
Isuzurover, no, I don't have that. The wide track is necessetated by the rear chassis, there was never any narrow rear track. that red one is a myster, I have that pic also, but it looks like a wide font axle, rather than a narrow rear. However it may be a foley, sandringham or home made job. That last one is a unit that I saw in teh flesh down here with it's fire fighting gear removed. in fact the gear on the tray is probably still where I saw it last.
Anybody who has Vin's, they would be appreciated as well.

From an au ebay ad, the crane was for sale not the vehicle. No other information recorded or remembered.I reckon I know that vehicle, where it is and it's current owner!
BTW it's a cherry picker not a crane.

e.g. - this is listed as an "early" model, and has the narrow track rear:

I have that red one too, photos taken at Cooma 1998.

I also know that Jindera RFB has a fire truck one too, but have been trying to get photos of it for a long time.

I thought that cherry picker looked familiar. We'll go with not an Australian built vehicle then ;)
Easo, can I use those pics (and remind me of your real name)? Definitely a factory unit from the chassis, but it appears to have a wide front axle!

Isuzurover, no, I don't have that.
OK - will scan the relevant pages from mine when I have a moment.
I have that red one too, photos taken at Cooma 1998.
Hmm - looks like it does have the wide track rear...

Sure, you may have to edit them apart as I scanned them together.

A 6WD would be perfect for wearing more tyres out, and for those for whom the turning circle of a 130 is too small.

This one is in regular use on a sheep property at Bigga near Crookwell in NSW. The table-top tips. PM me if you want contact details of the owner.

Ok, the page is online here (and expanding fast) Civilian 6x6 Land Rovers - Land Rovers Vehicles-REMLR (http://www.remlr.com/perentie-civilian6x6.htm). Yes, contact details are good, people to chase up history and vin numbers for me are even better!!!
KarlB, I already had one of those photos, I'll add the other later tonight. Are the photos yours (I'm picky about copyright these days).
Deejay, same question for you Re Fred's 6x6. And the one on carsales we've got most info, but I think I lost the vin :(

From an au ebay ad, the crane was for sale not the vehicle. No other information recorded or remembered. This vehicle is ex-Southern Electricity in the U.K. It was imported as one of a pair, I know the current location and owner of one very well - '91 Defender and can probably find out about the other.

Here is a shot of mine when I first saw it in Sydney back in the early 90,s or late 80,s. I cant remember now.
Galv wide body cab that was cut off with grinder from some kind of full length troopy body. It had been scrapped before I saw it.
Chassis was bought new from JRA by PO along with unused axles bottom pto, 3rd axle drive etc. Chassis being new is unstamped.
Diffs with white paint patch have been identified as Borg Warner by members of this forum. Both have factory diff locks vac operated.
The PO was going to make a demountable slideon type camper but ran out of money.
I bought it and built my own version.

isuzutooeh, i've grabbed the facebook pic, and would love some more info on it, but I will enquire on facebook.
KarlB, Can you give me your real name, or PM it for the copyright notification for the pic.
123rover50, that's a new one on me, so what chassis number is stamped on it now?

When I built it into a Custom built motorhome they gave me a number to stamp it with. Do you want that.?
It does not tie into any military background or anything.

G'day Folks :)
Those English 6 x 6's would probably be Carmichael chassis who did Rover's 110/Defender 6x6 chassis conversions a lot were also 6x4's
There was a bare new 6x6 Australian 6x6 chassis in the local secondhand/ex-auction dealer in Caboolture a few years ago,I didn't take a lot of notice of it as he wanted $$$$$$ for it, I have a funny feeling that it was a wide chassis,I am aware that the Dept of Defence did try to re-purchase those chassis that were auctioned off, post Gulf War 2 so that one in Caboolture may have been re-purchased as it was there for a lot of years, sitting by the fence.
The white 6 x 6 that was at Cooma 08 is still the property of Rover Aust. it was the prototype wide body and was retained by JRA, the driver, who was with his wife, is an old workmate of mine who recognised me after all those years, and we had a good talk and catch up while at the mass photo shoot:) sorry but I have not got Vin No's of either.
cheers

Do you have some before and after photos of your vehicle? I'm interested in it in general, also, it helps me weed out photos of it if I have some, and think it's a LRA built vehicle.

His name is Eric Shingles (Top bloke)
6x6 Crew Cab at Cooma. Was told it was converted from early narrow cab.

Eric & I got stuck talking to a LRA mil rep (came from the old JRA development team) for a good hour or so. (Eric grabbed his business card ;))In all the excitement I didn't get any pictures better than this!

I'd never seen a LR diff quite like this at the time. Is this the BW type??

Forgot Eric had a 6x6. Apparently he has quite a collection. A real LR tragic:). I haven't seen that type of rear cover plate mount for the difflock selector before, except on the US made Ox locker, but the difflock design internally would appear to resemble the McNamara or Ox locker design ,whereas 123Rovers difflock would be similar to the Maxidrive style. It would be interesting to know why none of the designs were chosen on production models because those vehicles with that limited suspension really needed difflocks.
Wagoo.

There used to be a 6x6 at what was then Davis motor works at Annangrove, NSW. It's not in the spot where I saw it now, but if you contact the current owner of Davis performance landys (Bruce Davis), he may be able to reveal it's whereabouts. It may belong to his brother John. Don
