gday everyone, to save me typing everything out twice im going to copy it from where i started on one of the chrysler forums. feel free to add your input wherever.
cheers, mat
Gday everyone.
i figure now that ive sold most my other toys and now something is very slowly happening on this one that i should start a thread that at least i can go back over to diagnose any problems later on, or you guys can have a laugh over my stuffups.
the project started out as a 68 440 and 727 complete but stripped and in good nick, was going to build a mid engined rail sort of buggy with solid mounted rear axle and a vw front.
then i remembered i had read somewhere that rangies used 727 autos in some years (82 to 85 the first factory autos) and while doing a bit of research on the subject a land rover forum member pointed me in the direction of a local with an engineless 84 model complete with doorhandles etc stripped off and it had a 727, so i paid 400 and picked it up then trial fitted the donk into the engine bay. All looked like it was going to fit.
so i pulled the 727 out of the rangie and mated it to the front case of the bigblock one, i havent rebuilt it yet but its all the same internally with a few minor differences.
once that all went back together i bolted it and the engine into place and then segt about correcting the slant on the auto (rover tilted the auto ono its side a bit so the starter ended up in the right spot for their conversion, they used a scout auto with an adaptor plate)
i ended up just raising the rhs transfer mount 75mm (i think it needed to be 85 in the end) then set about manufacturing the engine mounts.
i will be using a body mounts (probably those schumaker poly lock ones) and have had to die grind the rover mounts a little (they use the same style with a smaller bolt) im trying to make it so everything drops into the stock locations.
cheers, mat
