New Christchurch earthquake.

If you have access to a TV, their is live TV coming from Christchurch where another earthquake has just happened and it looks much worse than the first quake.

The national quake drums are off the scale in many places... this is a live feed so will disappear in a few hours or so...

Apparently not bigger

A MAJOR aftershock has rocked Christchurch in New Zealand a short time ago.

"You can see cars rocking as they go down the road," Sky News correspondent Kate King reports.
"I saw the ground role up in front of me. It lasted for about 20 to 30 seconds."
King said she saw fresh cracks appear in the road and "waterfalls of water" streaming as they pushed out of the ground.
"It's fair to say I'm a bit scared. There are people hugging each other. It's quite traumatic. Quite a lot of these people have lost a lot financially and mentally."
The shock measured 6.3 on the Richter scale.
Christchurch was rocked by a 7.1 earthquake in September last year causing widespread destruction.
This aftershock is the most severe of the thousands of aftershocks since then.

Gee very sad news reports of possible deaths, the iconic church looks like its been destroyed. I have a great soft spot for Christchurch in fact a love for the whole of NZ, very sad and it must be terrorfying have the big one last year and the numerous aftershocks ,and finally getting back in rebuilding and have this happen again so soon. My thoughts are with the Kiwis

5km shallower will be bigger in terms of power at the surface i should imagine. Cathedral is gone, buildings flattened and many reports of people trapped. early reports of multiple fatalities in the CBD from vehicles (incl two buses) trapped under rubble. Not looking lucky this time around... :(

Live news feeds from the TVNZ (http://tvnz.co.nz/national-news/live-updates-christchurch-quake-4038261) site.

The accelerative force of todays shake equalled the speed of gravity whereas the sept 4 shake was 0.8 the speed of G.

Reports of oak trees uprooted by it.

Holy moly just been reading about it... (can't see streamed stuff).
Hope it turns out to be less bad than it looks / sounds.

Besides the loss of life, I think the loss of the Cathedral will hurt the city's pride very badly. There was such pride that it withstood the last one. Sad news.

Apparently 150 special SAR (Search and Rescue, SES?) guys and girls coming over from Austrialia as we speak and should be landing shortly. Cheers guys, they're going to be needed badly. No new figures realeased as Bob Parker, the mayor of Chch patiently stated to the repeated journo requests for numbers, "...it is all about getting people out, not about getting statistics". So, still at 65 dead, and 100+ still missing.

this one is being touted as New Zealand's darkest day. Hope it is not so but the pictures imply otherwise.

I am there , not nice, lots of buildings gone, people trapped etc
it was less on the richter scale but much more powerful as it was shallow

I hope all is well with you Sashadidi. News coming out of the area indicates things are bad indeed.

Some information is coming out of the Crown Research Inst Geonet (http://www.geonet.org.nz/). That is the Geological and Nuclear Science research organisation.

A map (http://www.geonet.org.nz/var/storage/images/media/images/news/2011/lyttelton_pga/57159-1-eng-GB/lyttelton_pga.png)showing the peak ground acceleration relative to gravity (g).

The last update from them (http://www.geonet.org.nz/news/feb-2011-christchurch-badly-damaged-by-magnitude-6-3-earthquake.html)as at 7.00am this morning reads:

The city had been comparatively lucky with both the location and timing of last September's magnitude 7.1 Darfield (Canterbury) earthquake (http://www.geonet.org.nz/news/article-sep-4-2010-christchurch-earthquake.html); the location of this one within 10 km of the city and at a shallow depth of 5 km during the middle of a working day has resulted in destruction, injuries and deaths.
Shaking intensity in the city was much greater for this earthquake than the magnitude 7.1 earthquake for any of its other aftershocks. The highest shaking was recorded at Pages Road Pumping Station at 188 %g, with readings of 127 %g at Heathcote Valley Primary School and 107 %g at Hulverstone Road Pumping Station. This is due to the proximity of the epicentre to the city and the shallow depth.
Seismologically, this is classed as an aftershock because of its relationship to the ongoing activity since September last year. Its occurrence was always statistically possible, but the long time interval and slow decrease in general activity had made it less likely. Unfortunately, it has happened after all and in a location that has brought the worst result.

The death toll has been revised downwards (officially) now that the process of identification and notification of next of kin has started. It is at 38 confirmed dead. Many people are saying many more but officially, as identification takes places these are the numbers that will be released by the powers that be in charge.

Specialist urban search and rescue teams are arriving from Australia, Britain, Japan, and USA. Many are still missing but moves to create a list of these are just starting today so the numbers are many and varied.

Hi Bob,

Yes, epicentre was 10km SE of Chch CBD so in the hills above Lyttleton I think. See the geonet website below for location details. Makes for interesting reading.

Things are very hectic at the moment in the media as you would imagine as this unfolds and there has been little news of the outlaying areas. Latest news of the shake can be found at the news sites below.

Most effort is being concentrated on a couple of buildings and locations in the CBD area of the city but as more urban search and rescue folk arrive, searching will begin in other buildings of the CBD and then i guess fan out to outer areas as required. Obviously the media are focused on the 'high value' stories but I have spoken to my mum who has spoken to relatives in the Port Hills area. Much damage out there but all are OK, shaken and shocked but ok. What little coverage there has been of the out laying areas indicate west and north of Chch is relatively OK whereas east of the CBD and around the penninsula has some huge damage.

TVNZ (http://tvnz.co.nz/) - TV1 news site
TV3 (http://www.3news.co.nz/) News

EDIT: There has now been so many aftershocks registered since yesterdays big one that the info on the big has been placed in the 'archives (http://lists.geonet.org.nz/pipermail/eqnews/2011-February/004114.html)' of the information available in the Geonet website.

This is the NSW Health contribution as of 6pm last night.

At the request of Emergency Management Australia, New South Wales is deploying an Urban Search and Rescue (USAR) taskforce comprising 52 personnel from Fire and Rescue NSW, nine SCAT paramedics from the Ambulance Service of NSW, two doctors from NSW Health, two NSW Police Force officers, four Department of Services, Technology and Administration engineers and four ACT fire fighters.

A medical and surgical team of 30 NSW health staff (doctors, nurses, public health and paramedics) is on standby if further assistance is requested.

Going by other anouncements today (http://www.abc.net.au (http://www.abc.net.au/news/stories/2011/02/23/3146580.htm'section=justin)), the Police contigent has been increased to 300 comprising of officers from all states and the Commonwealth. The statement that a field hospital is being sent, it looks like the Army's 1 General Hospital is being mobilised.

My thoughts are for all our Kiwi brothers and sisters! :(
