radio in 80"

I came across this interesting pic or drawing I should say ( found on the "wireless for the warrior" web site ), of a 1950's Larkspur army radio fitted to a 80" Rover . This proves to me that Larkspur radios were used in early Land rovers !

That looks like a Larkspur C42 VHF set which is, as you suggest, late 1950's 1960's equipment and the table appears to be the standard Larkspur table as used in FFW/FFR right through the larkspur era including the SII/SIIa.

The artists impression leaves a little to be desired. Notice it is missing the transom and the seat backs are quite weird neither sprung shovels nor hinged spade shaped and the instrument panel is sitting behind the windscreen vent.

I have just aquired a C13 set , a Larkspur series radio , but HF ...it outwardly is the same as a C42 . The C42 is a VHF set , it operates above 30mhz . The C13 works on the short wave bands = skip . ..below 30mhz. Yes i noticed the table in that drawing loks like a standard type..should be easy to find one then. The C13 is near the end of valve technology , hence it's a very nice set to use . .. the earlier sets are junk in comparison.

The 62 set you mentioned is common too.... I have had a few of them over the years , it is a late WW2 design.. a batch of them were rebuilt here by PYE in Melbourne in mid 1950's . Not the best of sets . .. the internal rotary converter power supplies had a habit of burning out .

Andrew T just posted me the manual for the setup in the pic you posted.. the 19/31 AFV set. And most interseting is, the manual is dated 1955 and it covers the WW2 Jeep , Austin Champ and 80" Rover , all in one book and in British army service in 1955 !

Hi Mike,

Quite likely it is. See the hold-down bars at the top for the windscreen frame when it is folded down onto the bonnet / spare wheel and the pork pie tail-light. If it is an 88" it would be a Rover Mk 5, 86" were Rover Mk 3. Any other info with the photo?

That photo is from a manual ... I have bits of the manual - AT in Adelaide is emailing me sections of it .

I have on loan at present , the vehicle mounting trays for those LARKSPUR radios . I have drawn up the trays ..... relatively easy to make ... a bit of welding and fabricating involved .And a little lathe work, little locating tabs that lock into the radio case. The tray pictured is the upper one .

I have the whole manual now . Interesting it shows in detail, the wireless mounting setup in Rovers Mk 1 and 2 and 3 and 5

Mk 1 and 2 = 80"

Mk 3 = 86"

Mk 5 = 88"

I can only showa few pages as it has about 80 pages in all. It also covers trhe Austin champ setup too.

I am going back to this post for a reason . A chap in the UK very kindly scanned and uploaded the two FFW or FFR ( fitted for wireless or radio ) Land Rover table drawings for me . These are engineers drawings made by a draftsman or woman maybe.
