Need help.
Check your insurance
I just did. Whe I insured my Defender, not quite 2 years ago, I was given a market value of $17K.
I checked today and they tell me that they'd go by Glass's guide. Since I don't have access they said use redbook.
They couldn't give me a "market value" over the phone for some reason, but when I asked if I could insure for an agreed value - they said that they would oly go "slightly" above market value for any vehicle.
They told me that the maximum AGREED value they would do for
a 1994/5 Defender 130 with canopy, ARB bar, Side bars, dual battery system, auxilliary fuel tank and spotlights would be $11,150-00 (not a typo).
We all know I'd have no hope of buying a similar vehicle for anywhere near that price.
This is with Suncorp. So again I urge you to check yours !
This leads me to the question ; Who has insurance that PROPERLY covers off road use and is affordbale / offers a realistic agreed value ?

Most insurers I checked with will cover you anywhere you're legally allowed to be, except for racing/competitions.
I think they all also have some degree of stupidity disclaimer - you intentionally do something utterly stupid, you're on your own.

try ryno. I have a 4wd policy with them with agree'd value, wasn't the cheapest insurance for me, but cheaper than most, and seems to offer more than most in the default basic package, and the most important thing was they said its a 4wd, so if you can drive it somewhere, then its insured there as well.
Just a suggestion.
Was with Allianz, wont ever go with them ever again, have not got a good word to say about them what so ever, bunch of crooks. Bet everyone else loves them.
Haven't ever had a claim in my life and hope it stays that way.

im with nrma
i have my 94 es v8 disco with arb side steps arb winch bar ,2 inch lift dual bat and spot lights
my agreed value of $8000 is max they would insure, i doubt i could replace the car and everything on/in it for that, but it is a 16 yr old car that i paid $2k for stock.
they cover everywhere that is legal to drive excluding comps/rally's etc
to every 1's surprise i have experienced good service with nrma, (during the floods in qld i have a total loss of my work car), my claim was finalised and payment received within 7 days of incident, with a pay out well above market value

Just had the same thing for a '95 Defender insured with TCIS 4WD insurance. Agreed value dropped from $16K to $12K this year. Despite the policy saying "agreed value", we cannot agree. They will also not accept an independent valuation. I also am wondering what to do next.

Try Shannons. But make sure you convince them you are an enthusiast, or they won't insure you. Mention you're an avid off-roader, not just a camper, if it possible a member of an off-road club.

Hate to say it, but that is about the redbook value and there are a couple on carsales around that price.
Suncorp have always been stingy with agreed value - they use to state "Agreed value of $XXXX or market value whichever is the lesser"
I recently switched from suncorp to shannons. DGA I found quite good.
* Private Price Guide $8,900 - $11,700
* Trade In Price Guide $5,200 - $8,000
1996 LAND ROVER DEFENDER 130 $9,250
1994 LAND ROVER DEFENDER 130 TDI $19,990
dealer used car
1996 LAND ROVER DEFENDER 130 $13,900*
1996 LAND ROVER DEFENDER 130 TDI $20,500*
Genuine 77000Kms
1996 LAND ROVER DEFENDER 130 TDI $18,990*
1997 LAND ROVER DEFENDER 130 TDI $17,999*
Excl. Govt Charges
dealer used car
1997 LANDROVER DEFENDER 130 CREW CAB $19,500*
1995 LAND ROVER DEFENDER 130 $15,000*
1997 LAND ROVER DEFENDER 130 TDI $11,500*
1999 LAND ROVER DEFENDER 130 CREW CAB $12,990*
Exclude the dealer vehicles and the redbook prices are about right. This is what suncorp are basing their valuation on.

Yep - like most insurers, so long as your legally allowed to be there, you're covered (except in cases of extreme stupidity, where you directly caused the accident).

I was also with TCIS for a few years, I had the same problem, I had an agreed value not a market value.
The 1st year or two were good, then the renewals came in and the 'agreed' value plummetted despite all the extra's on the vehicle and no claims through them and full no claims bonus.
They would not discuss it or talk about changing the agreed value, so I went to 'Elders' insurance, I have been happy with them for the last couple of years and have all the same coverage, i.e off road cover (as long as on a marked map track), my choice of repairer etc.
As to whether they will be good in the event of a claim remains to be seen, but so far they have been very helpful and good to deal with.
I went through the Horsham office even though I live near Geelong.

I have a 95 Defender 130 - ARB winch bar, dual battery setup, LR tank - agreed value with NRMA $14,100.
Got the insurance about 5 weeks ago so this is still current policy.

I've got Shannons. Never had to claim so don't know if you have fight for a pay out, but had no problems insuring my 95 130 defender for $18000. All my add ons are included (including roof top tent) for items that get stolen. Legal off road driving is included.
Enquired with APIA, who wanted heaps more for the premium. When I said Shannons were a lot cheaper, the girl replied "As soon as you said you were with Shannons I knew we couldn't match them".

I have my Perentie insured with Shannons. They first asked me some questions and wanted to work out if I was a "lifestyle" 4wd owner or a 4wd enthusiast. The former they don't like to ensure as they explained it these people have 4wds because they have a boat or caravan or they fish and a 4wd is required to live the lifestyle they want. The enthusiast is someone who is part of a club and/or visits car shows that type of thing.
Onto the vehicle their book value for a 110 County, the only thing it could be compared to, is a lot less than I wanted to get mine insured for. They had no problem but of course it affected the premium. Which for limited use was $350 a year comprehensive. I explained that yes the car wont be used much but if it is it'll likely go long distances and they were fine with this. As for damage off road, if you're allowed to legally drive there they will cover you, no comps etc as mentioned.

I have my '94 200 tdi defender insured with Shannons for the agreed price of $17,000.00 plus I can add any legal modifications/upgrades (which increases the agreed insured value)
they tell me I'm covered so long as I'm legally allowed to be there - be that on a beach, private road etc. IF something did result in our car being written off, I get first rights to the car and then paid the balance.
So far, I've not had to make a claim, but am very happy with their cover.

The other factor is where the vehicle is garaged....if you live in an area where car theft is high regardless of what you drive you will pay for that risk.
