Factory Series 1 Colours

Hi Guys,


I was just wondering about Paint Colours for my 1951 SWB. I was looking at a green of some sort, but I was wondering if anyone had some good colours they could share along with some pictures. :)

Well I'm a bit unsure about DBG because all the Landies I've seen online look average. I was thinking of something like Middle Brunswick Green, using this guide: BS-381C Colours (http://www.stephen.hull.btinternet.co.uk/bs381c.html). But I'm open to all opinions and different colours.

The problem is that when you look 'online' you are not seeing the real colour. It depends on the camera that took the picture (settings etc.), lighting at the time the photo was taken and the settings of the monitor you are viewing on.
I posted a picture of part of my S1 some years ago and someone commented that it was Brunswick green, it isn't and the picture looked very different to the actual colour.

Deep bronze green is the 'correct' colour and any good paint supplier can match to the original colour. One of the suggested places to get a sample of the original colour is the back of the handbrake blanking plate below the passenger seat.

You can, of course, paint it any colour you like but from experience the closer you can get to the original the better the future resale value because the purchaser isn't factoring in a respray....

Hi guys,

Is it true the chassis were left galv steel, not painted originally, as well as the front bumper?

Ours needs some sort of new coating, just wondering what to do with it.

I think the original plan was for the chassis to be galvanised but in production it ended up just painted silver for the very early models then it changed to green and mid 50's changed to black. Not sure of the exact dates of the changes but I'm sure someone on the forum will know.....

Nothing to stop you galvanising the chassis and then painting the correct colour for the vehicles age.

I belive it was mid 1955 when the chassis stopped being painted green for green bodyed vehicles & blue on the grey painted Landys, from that date the chassis were black. :D

As Henry Ford said of the model T - you can have any colour you want on your 1951 80" as long as it's deep bronze green! :D

Although there were a few exceptions for fleet orders, the British Army had sand colour for the Middle East as did the RACQ, but most were dbg.

Well, I ended up getting some Rust Guard Primer from Bunnings so I'll start simple and come to colour finish when I get to that stage. :P
