I've got a problem with my Defender wipers. They have a fair bit of play in them, which between me and the guys at MR have identified as a problem with the gaering and spindle between the rack and the wiper arm.

The only way I can see to get near the offending park is to remove the dash, which I'm not very enthusiastic about!

Has anyone replaced this bit? If so, did it involve removing the dash?

I don't envy you.

The wipers are the first item to re-install after stripping down a firewall.

You may get access to the right spindle by just removing the crash pad on top of the dash, jist a bunch of self tappers, but I am not 100% sure if you don't have to remove other bits as well.

If access to the motor is easier than the wheel boxes, then you can disconnect the motor end of the cable & rotate it to get to the unused sections of the wheelbox gears.

Once you have the cable free, mark which side fitted into the motor (you want this to be reversed when you've finished rotating).

Remove the wiper arms & mark one of the spindle shafts.

Rotate the wiper cable until the marked spindle shaft is now 180deg from it's original spot. The cable is made with a screw type thread & it doesn't matter which way you turn it.

Make sure the cable is reversed & reassemble the wiper motor & fit the arms.

You're now running on the unused side of the cable & the unused sections of both wheelbox gears.

Had the same symptom with my wipers but in my case it was only the lugs that fit on the end of the shafts and on which the wiper arm is fitted.
The grub screws had worn away and there was heaps of play. Had to drill the grub screws out then fitted new lugs and put the wipers back on - good as new.
