Hi everyone,

I want to buy a cargo barrier very soon for the D3 and was hoping to get feedback of first hand experience from D3/4 owners.

Namely what are the likes and disliked and what was the best value make for the money of the various ones available on the Aussie market?

cheers,
Terry

I've only ever used Milford Cargo Barriers so I can't comment on other brands, but I can't fault the quality of the Milford barriers we've had in the past.

My only gripe is they don't make one to fit our RRS.

Terry,
The market designed ones for the D3/4 are primarily the same, the extension arms bolt into the roof above the D pillars & use the existing tie downs to mount the front section.
The 3 different ones i have seen are all load tested to meet ADR's.
From memory the factory unit is made by Hayman Reese & the other 2 are also locally sourced.
Simon Arch 4x4intelligence.com.au on the site is a reseller too.
So basically Factory/Dealer one RAA557 from memory.
And the other 2 which can be sourced.
Milford do not make any barriers for the D3.

Cheers

Interesting, Thanks for the update.
Admitedly when i checked (from Milford) before Christmas they said they were not going to make them.
May have changed their mind's.
Cheers

Hi Sniegy,

I have been in contact with Simon already and right now his is basically the barrier I'm looking at getting. I just thought before I made up my mind 100% I'd ask what the other options were.

cheers,
Terry

I have one of Simons barriers and have been very happy with it.
Some fun times installing the mount points above the rear door but other than that, no problems.

One thing that might be worth considering and I'll need to have a look at mine is...how you get access to the rear cargo area if your rear door lock fails? I took mine out about a week before the rear latch failed on my car and I'm not sure how I could have got in to the rear without breaking a window or cutting the barrier. This probably applies to all barriers and not just Simons.

Hi Terry,

I have the Milford D3 cargo barrier in my D4. ( part No. 706975 ) It fits perfectly, but rules out using 3rd row seats. It is side airbag compatible, and looks to be far enough back not to cause any issues. The front mounts use arms that lock into the front tie down points in the cargo area floor. The rear mounts use arms back to trim above the rear door opening. A little fiddly to fix the rearmost mounts in place, but it looks ok . Just take your time and be careful. I used Sniegy's notes on his rear antenna mount to remove the trim panel.

I believe it would be still possible to gain access the cargo area if the tailgate locks played up. Once the seats are forward, the screw knobs for the forward mounts are accessible. Once out, the cargo barrier will hinge rearwards, and with a bit of effort, the rearmost screw mounts are reachable. Might take a bit of sweat, and scratch a few plastics, but it could be done if you had to.

Does anyone have a post on installing a cargo barrier for a D3. Are they easy to install or should one have a specialist installer?
I know my D2 was not easy as the brackets for the roof were under the trim.

Hedley,
The D3/4 is FAR easier than the D2.
The hardest section is the rear roof section, remove trim, mark holes & drill out. The front section uses existing tie downs.
Not very hard if you are handy with tools. And you have the forum for help & if close someone can drop by to help out.;)

I recently fitted a Hayman Reece barrier and it is well finished and wasn't difficult to fit. The instructions supplied are OK and include templates but the templates for the plastic trim weren't great, I could have just used the moulded marks in the back of the trim and got a better fit.
I also modified the lower mounts so that the fit with the standard tie-down points was neater.

Last Sunday at Wandin I had a look at the barrier from Fourby Fitouts in Hallam, this is probably better than the HR unit in that it isn't offset so much in the top section and so gives a more room in the rear. Has the advantage of also allowing you to 'plug & play' some of their other shelving etc.

Hi there,

A few years back I had this Autosafe custom make me a barrier to fit my custom made rear draws.

Autosafe Industries Pty Ltd - Home (http://www.autosafe.com.au/page1.php)

They took an existing full height D3 cargo barrier and basically shortened it to suit my draws.

The custom setup is actually want I wanted in the first place, just the upper barrier.

Not real keen on your fire extinguisher position though...
I mount mine as low as possible just in case they do get loose.
