OK so its finally time do get rid of the old 4.0l and the zf auto, I'm sick of the 3 1/2hp it has and hate the auto programing.
So i'm putting an injected 304 and turbo 700 auto in it, it should hit the street with about 350hp. does anyone know if there is a turbo 700 to rr transfer case adapter kit available. the only ones i can find are for the turbo 400 which is a 3 spd and no lock up converter.
cheers

yeh in my p38. more than likely going to piggy back the computers, but will see what happens when we get to that point.

This is an awesome post. I agree with you totally, I cant see why piggy-backing the ecus is not possible. The thing I fear is future troubleshooting, as it will get more complicated. But dropping in a more modern donk and box seems like an awesome project. Document and photo everything and the best of luck to you.

Yippee! Hope it all works out... an alternative solution at the next re-build would be nice!!! :D

Wasn't there someone here attempting this a few years ago? AFAIK, it wasn't finished due to the ECU hurdles.

Why a 5L? why not something worthwhile like atleast an LS1?

I like your choice of engine there! I believe the injected Holden donks are by far the best sounding bent eight around! My previous car had one and I thoroughly enjoyed every drive!
Try Wholesale Automatics (don't have the number handy but they are google-able) for the transfer case adaptor - they seem to be able to fit anything up to anything else! I got my T700 through them (for my chev) and they are excellent to deal with.

Ritters used to do a T700 to viscous transfer adapter years ago, could try them.
Oh and good luck

well im sad to say that after all the research and pricing the conversion wont be happening, the conversion is possible but it is just to far over my budget.
instead i have ordered one of these33874. also getting sent a zf4hp24 from the same place that they guarantee me will hold up to the power. total price of all the parts ive ordered for the job comes in at $12000. I still would have rathered to the conversion but when the pricing got to $20000 i started looking at other options.

After just going through the same research exercise also think about Davis Performance Landys at Annangrove in Sydney. 12k installed. He has a version there that you can test drive running petrol and LPG. To be honest more torque and stronger but fir only 400cc you don't get a lot over a standard p38.
5.0l long from the Uk about 7.5K plus shipping GST and import.
5.2 long motor from the UK 9K plus shipping GST and import.
LS1 or LS2 wreckers from a rear end smash about 2-4K plus 3K adapters and then fitting.
LS2 crate engine 4-6K
I also bought a P38 locker from a guy with a brand new defender in Wodonga. Open the bonnet and he has ripped the brand new engine out and replaced it with a brand new 6.2L A mechanic who has done the job himself and wow everything down to the steering wheel with paddle sports shift, new dials lockers etc. An absolute gem!
