How long do we need to do it justice?

We'll be in elderly parents / sealed roads / lodge / Freelander mode, not Defender / camping / offroad mode.

TIA & regards

In a freelander only a few days but I would make sure you spend time in Litchfield N.P. You should see both but I like Litchfield better.

+1 for Litchfield - in fact if you aren't into long walks over boulders to get to the falls then Litchfield is a much better prospect than Kakadu.

To answer your question, I would give yourself 3 days - spend part of one of those in a plane or chopper if you can, its a great way to see the place. The other two can be split between doing tours and checking out the waterfalls.

Go through Litchfield NP on your way there or back, at least to Florence Falls. That was our favourite day trip when we lived in Darwin.

Enjoy!

When was that? We used to go there in the early 80's.

If you are driving to Darwin..

Turn off at pine creek, and come up thru to yellow water ( kooinda ) and stay for a night, do the yellow waters cruise and or a flight.

Then head off to the crocodile motel (gagadiu) and you can do the Jim Jim/ Twin falls trips( if it suits, as you cant do them on your own last time we were there)

then head to litchfield stopping at "windows to the wetlands" along the way..You can stay at either Batchaler or one of the many new places on the way to litchfield..

You can exit litchfield via a dirt road which brings you out at Berry springs, otherwise you have to back track the main rd.

OR..

You could jump in a plane and fly over Kakadu and see 100 times more, then do a day trip from darwin to Litchfield..

If you plan to stay in Kakadu expect to pay top $$$ and if you are sticking to the bitumen there is not a real lot to see.

The plane option sounds $$$ but once you work it out with the price of accom in Kakadu its not to bad and you will see HEAPS more..

Answer to your Q....3 days and you will see all you can via the bitumen.

Cheers Ean

Yes as they are different. you have to pay a fee for Kakadu, Litchfield is free. Ean gave you a route to follow. Look at Kakadu National Park - Home (http://www.environment.gov.au/parks/kakadu/) as to what to see and do and what is open.

having done both, Id take litchfield over kakadu, kakadus nicer to fly over, litchfields nicer up close and personal.

to do all the good tours comfortably and a little walking Id call 4 days for either.
