I am trying to find somewhere good in brisbane to buy fresh seafood.

I do not mind if the seafood is on ice, just preferably not frozen.

I am after things like baby octopus, squid, uncooked crab, prawns, bugs, lobster etc.

Also oysters and mussels.

Thank you in advance for any suggestions given.

Definitely Raptis. Just go and ask them, I've found them very helpful. Their website is Raptis Fish Markets - Brisbane Shop (http://www.raptis.com.au/retail/brisbane.html)

Been there twice and had horrid stuff, (fish and prawns) from them on both occasions, i wont go there.

The fish factory just down the road from them on the other hand is spot on every time we go there. My parents have been going there for about 4 years and never complained.

Cabbage Tree ck. Shorncliffe, next to the shutdown Co-op, the trawlers are selling direct from the trawler, couldn't get any fresher. Prices are good, best days Thursday, Friday. Kings ,bays, sand crabs , and more. Bob

Good 1 Bob10 ,

I was about to post, IMHO if you cant buy it direct from a fishing boat, then if its not local produce, meaning within 100 odd kms from Brisbane then chances are its been frozen and thawed...

Prawns, bugs and squid would be hard to tell the difference, but stuff like crabs, fish (unless filleted..and fillets is often old whole fish that has had to be filleted because its use by date on ice has expired) are very noticable when they have been frozen...Crab proberly the most..

Cheers Ean

I usually get mine from Morgans seafood at Scarborough - no problems with the quality and price is generally simiar to other places I;ve seen

They're OK, even though they're owned by a tyrant. Had both good and bad from there.

Their restaurant is utter rubbish. Tried twice, and both times had to complain to the manager, and he didn't argue.

Then again, coming from a family who owned trawlers, I'm a bit fussy perhaps.

BTW, if you're after good prawns, sometimes bugs and occasionally crabs, my mate who owns 2 trawlers might be able to help out.

EDIT: My mate as a supplier is very 'coincedental', i.e. I virtually have to be at the boat when it arrives, and this is very random. Not sure if he's willing to sell to anybody, but I could probably help out with an occasional large order. Small orders would be a PITA for me.

Only place i get mine is from Aussie Seafood House, they've got stores at capalaba, strathpine and durack. Normally got a better variety than most places too in my opinion.

The fisho (road side van) opposite The Glen hotel, Logan Rd, 8 Mile Plains. Been going to him for years and never been dispointed.

A fisho van, not far from Shorncliffe, sells his prawns about $2 per k. dearer. Imo, buy from the boats, have a talk to ranga , his mate could be better value still. As Ean said, you are guaranteed freshness. Bob.

Thank you for the info.

I had thought about that area as I have seen them there before.

Would the best time be early morning to head over there?

Early mornings are best. Be aware that technically to sell to the public you need a dealers license. Some skippers have these, some don't. Some care, some don't! Hence, if they tell you they can't help you, this might be why, rather than them just being nasty. Some are just nasty/lazy/have no product left/must sell to their regular buyers first/run out, etc, etc.

A fairly safe bet is Friday mornings. Trawlers are restricted to work in Moreton bay from 6pm Friday until 6pm Sunday, so many return on a Friday morning.

Scarborough harbour is a bit problematic because it's very open, and rarely do trawlers openly sell to the public. Shornecliffe, on the other hand, is a bit of a backwater, and they do often openly sell to the public, be it legit or otherwise.

PS - check my PM.
