Snorkels for Puma 90

Can anyone recommend a snorkel for my Puma 90; I assume that the Land Rover part is a silly price so I'm thinking Safari, any views and/or any other ideas? I'm going to the UK in June but didn't really want the hassle of bringing one back, goodness knows what it looks like going through an x-ray machine :)

There will always be a debate about which snorkel is better than another.

However regardless of the snorkel you choose you should consider how it is connected from the mudguard to the air box.

The standard Puma engine plumbing consists of two or three separate parts none of which are sealed one to the other. So if water tightness is a requirement then the installer should replace those bits with a single length of flexible rubber duct sealed at both ends with sikaflex. The drain in the bottom of the air box can also be sealed.

BTW I have had this installation done with a Safari snorkel

Hi aj90,

I have installed a Safari on my 110 puma. The instructions with the one i bought are pretty easy to follow and show how to seal up all the internal plumbing with sikaflex. Pretty good price too. I think it was around the $325 mark.

I had ARB install my safari snorkel, would they have sealed up inside properly ? What should I look for to check that they have done this properly ?

Best bet is to take the snorkel head off and put your hand over the top of the snorkel. If the motor struggles you have a seal, if there is no difference to engine note there are holes still in the system.

Probly an easy way to tell is to have a look at the ductwork running from the snorkel to the airbox under the bonnet. The join that fits the duct to the airbox should have some signs of sikaflex or similar sealing up this joint, as normally it's just a slip on joint.

Along the lines of what Tomo said:

Remove snorkel head
Start engine and leave idling
Hold a suitable item (e.g. plastic chopping board) - i.e. something that won't get sucked down the snorkel or injured (i.e. hand) - firmly over the snorkel intake.

If snorkel is sealed, engine should stop running.

If engine keeps running, there is a leak(s). On a non-efi motor, you can find the leaks using aerostart. However I am not sure I would try that on a vehicle under warranty.

You're right the LRA price is silly ~ $1400 fitted. However the Land Rover model does looks good.
