Ireland - what to see ?

We're going to spend three weeks in Ireland in July
Hiring a car and basically starting in Dublin and working around the bottom half ( Cork, Kilkenny, Ring of Kerry ?)
Have Lonely Planet but it's a lot to wade through - looking for some quick hints on what not to miss seeing.
Not really much into museums and churches, more the landscape and natural area.

We went around Ireland and up and down the middle twice in 4 weeks. Its not far from one end to the other, about 450km. Scenery will take your breath away, your camera will not do it justice. People say you should have your first Guiness in Ireland, and you will not get a better drop anywhere else. Derry mountains are excellant.There is a place where Queen Victoria stayed for a week or two. Absolutley fabuolus scenery around that valley, it is where 2 landowners gave their properties to the National Trust. Ladies of the Lake I think it is called. So there is one hugh valley that will be preserved forever. Dingle is a good place too. Beware of the narrow roads though, sometimes even a bus has to squeeze through.

A must is a night at the Brazenhead taven in Dublin (est) 1198, great music and atmosphere, tour of the Guinness brewery, a trip down to the anceint Celtic capital Tara, I believe it was a royal capital, Cliffs of Moher, Dingle is beautiful, the northwest coast is amazing and a lot of the people in the small villages in the north west don't speak English, which was a bit funny at the time, especially when asking for directions:D

These were places I went when I was there, I loved everything about Ireland, it was even interesting being pulled up by the Irish army when crossing from the North back into the Republic:D

The Irish are extremely friendly and welcoming, it was the highlight of my tour around Europe, along with Scotland and Italy.

Thanks guys - that makes me even more keen now.
We've booked mostly small guest houses / local pubs to stay in so the "craic" should be good ;)
Dunno how I'll go with the full irish breakfast everyday though - seeing i normally only have weeties.

They do have cerial for breakfast too;)

Try and spend most of your time away from the tourist traps, most of the pubs in O'Connell St in Dublin are full of Americans:mad: but it's a good walk down to look at the statues and old buildings, some of which still have the bullet holes and damage from the uprising in the mid sixties,

The Long Room in Trinity college is worth a look just to see The Book of Cells!!!

We're going in July.
And basically doing exactly what you suggest - except we may not get up as far as Donegal. From Galway we're planing to go inland, going up to Omagh?? and the lakes area ( I think )
I've done some research- - I was just wondering if anyone knew any "special" places that are not in the tourist guides. ( or busy places to avoid)
Definitely not spending much time in Dublin - we're not into big cities.

Bunratty Castle medieval dinner with entertainment was a lot of fun. There are several B and Bs nearby.
Dublin was in a snowstorm when we were there, but looked like the sort of place I'd go back to explore. Lots of history. Trinity uni is good. There's a backpackers nearby was cheap. Lots of pubs etc.
Kilkenny and that area was lovely.
Cliffs of Mohr definitely.
Lots of interesting little towns and castles around - its great if you just like nosing about.
Get a B and B guide - they are everywhere and you can haggle.
