Check for oil and water levels and cross contamination turn it over by hand if you can then try and start. If the oil and water are ok its amazing what will start after a few years:) most problems will be electrics particuarly if its a rover:p

One's for petrol, one's for diesel. Both for The Good Oil, because I couldn't find definitive threads when I went looking.

If its been sitting for a really long time pull the spark plugs, give a generous squirt of Inox, WD40, etc in each pot and let it sit for a day or so then turn it over, just in case.
Some V8's you can get to the oil pump drive as they drive off the bottom of the distributor, so it can pay to remove the dizzy after marking where it sat, get a long allen key or slotted bit, depending on the drive, and using a battery drill prime the pump and oil galleries/bearings.
Oh, and drain as much of the old fuel out of the tank as possible (if it hasn't all evaporated already)
Petrol goes off pretty badly in a relatively short space of time.
