His project is a 73 2 door cut down to a ute LS1 ZF auto rover diffs 4.11 ashcroft , pegged & locked diffs and ashcroft cv,s & axles in the front rear is the same but mcnamarra axles 37" maxis creepy.s
Here some pics of the motor and trans before and after instalation:cool:
This is not for all you doomsdayer,s to knock his attempt to run the zf with the LS1 he is aware of your theorys, The trans has been modded and he is willing to try it:wasntme:

It looks great, I saw it just after the engine was dropped in but was not going yet but was great to hear he got it back on the road.
I can't wait to take a ride.
I recon for most people the ZF will be plenty strong but with Rags driving I don't know :p
Just stiring, it's been well thought through and should work out fine.
Cheers Casper.

Well it has been registered and engineered for 3 months now done a couple of shake down trips and done a couple of thousands ks on the black stuff and its still going strong and the ZF auto has not been any dramas at all :p

Why did you use a ZF auto? I'm not fimaliar with the probs,
Did ya use a Patrol transfer box?
Cheers NAT

Wiring up an LS1 is easy, utelising the factory ECU is the go, its excellent, the ZF on the other hand......fine if driven easy.....

Nice Rangie! Can you tell me where I can get my hands on a bellhousing conversion to suit the LS1 to ZF box? Cheers, Dan

I was chatting with Rags the other night about it and he was saying that he has had some teething trouble with flex plates letting go, seems to be an alignment issue he thinks.
As far as the ZF not handling it, it seems fine at the moment and he is not very nice to it most of the time.
It's running a LT230 TC I believe as I'm running what what was his spare in my 300Tdi Disco at the moment.

Why can't you. According to my calcs, a 6.0L LS2 would be no worries in a D90, assuming the weight of 1700kg's.
QLD transport do make it hard to find the info on their website though...

Wow Looks good, interested in knowing how you have plumbed it up looking at this pic here
http://www.aulro.com/afvb/attachments/projects-tutorials/33828d1299027363-rags-rover-ls1-zf-car-007.jpg
Either your motor sits alot higher than mine or the 4 bolt steering box is much shorter, they look to be mounted roughly in the same position otherwise, mine may be a little further back. With the 3 bolt steering box i am having some clearance issues..

Engine and trans were moved 50mm forward and also custom mounts made for engine and chassis , We had the same issue as you so we decided it was easier to raise the engine slightly to keep all bolt on acc,s for the motor standard for ease of replacement in the future;)

I couldnt lift my engine any higher because of the high mount alternator, but after looking at some 4 bolt steering boxes i think i would be able to get away with just using one of them instead of the bulkier 3 bolt

well i had lots of bellhousing probs as dellows bellhousing didnt fit prop as it touched on some bolts that hold the rear main oilseal in and when i bolted the auto up it twisted it out of shape that caused all sorts of probs.so i sent it back to him but he wont do anything about it (he wants me to pay for it) so after a exchange of words he hung up on me saying he will send my twisted one back so now the car remains in bits anyone else had probs with there work?

That sounds on par for Dellows. Anything that doesn't line up is something you've done, not an issue with his dodgy casts.

10th October 2011, 06:57 PM
well the saga continues dellow saids he posted my bellhousing back to me but it hasent showed up i think he is getting rid of the evidance. it has been 3 weeks and has no tracking number so its of to the soliciter .and the car remains in bits now im thinking t700 with lt230 it might be quicker to do this.then sell the zf and adaptor:mad:what do you think?
clubagreenie
11th October 2011, 08:20 AM
Sell the ZF and demand a refund on the adaptor
cal415
11th October 2011, 10:45 PM
Go the t700, do you know where you can get an adapter for the lt230? i would like to do something similar myself in another truck down the track...
my dellow bell housing is all good so far, do you ahve any pics of the damaged one?
rags67
12th October 2011, 07:25 PM
ok looks like im getting my bellhousing back so i will get it surfaced and put it back in im now thinking about supercharging the ls1 down the track so i will sell the zf conversion down the track and go a mod 4l60e.andrew from hiline 4wd does a great adaptor for the lt230 that is race proven.i will post some photos of the probs with the bellhousing soon it will just need a little ajusting with a grinder then all good:cool:
cal415
12th October 2011, 10:22 PM
Do you know what he charges for the adapter kits?
rags67
13th October 2011, 06:55 AM
bellhousing was $850 tourque converter was $1350 from tct melbourne and tailshafts were $750 then u need to spend more to get the zf to take that power

This baffles me everyone bags out the ZF to the Ls1 conversion ,
The only person that i know of that has attempted this trans engine combo is Rags ,
I have driven and seen this combo in anger with no trans problems at all !
I state the trans has not been the problem here !
It has been the bell housing made by a supposed expert that has been the root of evil all along here
End of rant;)

Why? Just because it doesn't implode on the first few outings doesn't mean it will last, when it's done 150,000kms trouble free, then it's gloating time
Rags, shame to hear about the bellhousing, not real good a product that doesn't do the job, I've read a bit of bad stuff about dellows, alot of to and fro to get right

Hang on, A GM trans in a stock Range Rover TD6 doesn't last 150KK.

Mainly because there not made to handle a LS1, they are bloody expensive to fix and upgrade, not that common compared to a t700 and they have a hard enough time standing up to the land rover motors :)

So? Bit irrelevant
4l60e won't handle an ls1 when you thrash it anyhow, mine lasted about 1200kms, it had done 56,000 total, but for a bit over a grand they can be built to cope with it, a zf takes 7-8grand

Ah, do I sense a humour bypass?
I would be interested to know if Rags has solved his earlier reservations about the alignment of the adaptor.Ie once the interference issue is solved is he happy with the adaptor?
Isn't there a clearance problem with the T700 sump and the front shaft? I seem to recall seeing a photo with a poofteenth and wonder how it would go with bushes compressing etc on a rough road.
And is the overall length of the700 same or less than a ZF?
Is the diameter the same for floor clearance?

Well time will tell with this zf and yes this zf has had some mods so it is not standard ! ( i did quote this in a earlier post ) and thats if he sticks with the zf , He is contemplating a blower on the ls1 thats where this zf will fail quicktime im my opinion .
(Off track a bit here)
Oh and plenty of standard ls1 commy,s with l460e trannys out there still going strong with well over 200000 ks ,
How can you base your findings with one tranny (l460e) to so many out there that have not had the same dramas as you ,
Im supprised you still own and drive a landy considering their reputation is far worse than a single l460e tranny :p,

Hardly a single tranny, I've seen plenty fail, you might be forgetting I've been working on other people's cars for a few years and lots of my friends thrash there cars, it's just one example
Plenty of zf autos with high kays too, but not thrashed, anyhow, I don't know much, I've never fitted larger engines infront of a zf and had them fail:p

well what can i say lots of talk about the zf its not a standard item its had heeps done to it and i havent been to kind to it .the car is registed and engineered and i am glad to say it is now back on the road:) i have fitted a tow bar so now i can tow a trailer with it and use it for work.i plan on using it everyday and clocking up plenty of ks as there are no comps in vic there is no sence in it sitting in the shed so time will tell

what the fuel usage like in it? i havnt driven mine on road enough to get an idea what it will be like for long trips, but it certainly chews it up on the beach, but not as much as the old 4.4 or 3.5....

its good compared to a rover v8 i tend to drive it a bit hard (i like to take off from the lights flat out) the tank holds aprox 100lt and gets around 700ks but if driven slower i would say around 800ks

Hey rags, can you tell me what was done to your zf when you say you had it beefed up? Send me an answer via PM if you wish. I'm looking at doing an LS1 conversion on my disco 2 and looking at every possible option for mine. I hope you don't break anything either:angel:
Also, are you running a electronic ZF or hydro? I'll need a separate tranny controlller if I stick with mine..

well its been a while but now i am getting ready to do cliffhanger with only 10 weeks to go the car is in bits again.i decided to do away with the zf that served me very well with no probs using it as a work car and weekend toy .but now i am doing some big power upgrades it was time to spend the big $ so a full reco 4l80e strengthened & manulised gq tailshafts and defender salsbury diff with dana 60 r&p 4.11 .the ls1 motor now has a big cam lifters pushrods roller rockers h/d valve springs and i am now looking for a top mount supercharger but the same old thing i am running out of money fast.at the moment the motor is back in diff in but waiting on the trans to be finished.with only 10 week to go im getting a bit worried
rags67
12th March 2013, 02:30 AM
well now the 4l80 is in and the marks adaptor went in well but it is very long i had to cut out the crossmember thet goes at the rear of the seat mount.the next thing to do is make a tailshaft adaptor that will let me run the nissan tailshaft.the only prob so far is the front propshaft clearance i cant use the nissan.i have tryed lifting motor & box higher but it still hits the side of the trans.the only way out is to use the solid rangie front shaft if everything goes well i should be driving it by the weekend:)

10th June 2013, 08:07 AM
well here we are again 3 months later cliffhanger has been & gone and the rangie still isnt going.there was a fault with the aUTO SO THE CAR WENT BACK TO HAVE THAT DONE THEN THE GUY THAT DID THE R&P IN THE REAR DIFF MADE A HELL OF A MESS OF THAT SO CAM FROM CAMMO OFFROAD DID A GREAT JOB OF FIXING THAT.IT GOES IN FOR A DYNO TUNE FRIDAY THEN I CAN SAY FINISHED AND THEN BE ABLE TO DRIVE IT BUT YESTERDAY I STARTED IT UP TO FIND NOW I HAVE A BLOWN HEAD GASKET:(.SO WHAT IS IT ABOUT RANGE ROVERS YOU PUT A LS1 IN IT AND IT SUDDENLY STARTS LEAKING OIL AND BLOWS HEAD GASKETS:p.HOPEFULLY IT WILL BE GOING SOON WITH LOTS MORE POWER

3rd February 2014, 04:25 PM
