This won't apply to those towns in NSW where you must reverse angle park.
but say on a parallel street parking is it mandatory that one must reverse park? I see so many vehicles stop and hold up traffic reversing into parking spots where there is no need, they can drive straight in , in a forward movement.
I can drive my disco forward into a lots of parking spots yet I see people in those small hatch backs do the reverse parking trying to park even though 2 bays are empty. Again they hold up traffic from behind.
So is it breaking the law park without reverse parking???

There is no LAW that requires you to reverse park.

:D:D

this reminds me of a Seinfeld episode where it is claimed that only people driving getaway vehicles park while going forward .....

is it simply that no normal driver wants to be regarded as a driver of a getaway car ?

I reverse into every parking. As you drive past the spot you can see everythings clear. When you leave often by the time you drive off you could have no idea of what has happened around you in the blind spots.

I can annoy the impatient amongst us at times getting the Defender into a tight spot, but tough ****, I hopefully will never hit a kid on the way out.

I don't mind people reversing in, that extra 10 seconds doesn't bother me a whole lot.

What can get annoying is the people who crawl along a road 'chasing' pedestrians for their park and then blocking the road for 5 minutes while the people put things in their car etc. Happens quite a bit near Flinders Hospital in Adelaide.

The reality is that with reverse parking, the parking spaces can be smaller. This is because you need to to have a greater distance between vehicles to park parrallel to the kurb with forward parking.

AFAIK forward parking is mandated in the UK.

Wasn't aware that forward parking was mandated in the UK, it wasn't when I lived there a few years ago.

I noticed when I first arrived in Australia that the majority of people seemed to forward park (90 degree) compared to the UK where most (where I lived) reverse parked. I still tend to reverse park ready for a quick getaway.......
In 90 degree parking it's easier to hold up the traffic while you reverse in (they have no choice but to wait) rather than trying to reverse out into traffic (where they choose not to let you out).

Thanks Scott, I'd edited before you posted. My comment was regarding 'reverse parking' in general

You're taught to reverse parallel park for your driving test because you can manoeuvre into a smaller spot but I would tend to forward park if there was room. Anyway in the fender you just mount the kerb as you swing into the spot and then drop the wheel back onto the road as you straighten up :)

There should be a law that forces people to change inappropriate usernames.

the new VW is supposed to park for you. I wonder how small a space they can go into?

I have seen people reverse park into a spot and have the front right hand guard swipe a passing car in the next lane, if you are reversing a car, for any reason you MUST give way to ALL other traffic, so if you bump into someone while reversing you can be booked for failing to give way or neg. driving, Regards Frank.

The park assist in a VW - you press a button and it parralel parks for you.. but only backwards.

A lot of work places now enforce reverse parking. In my line of work i travel around a fair bit and you get to see the different rules in different towns the best one i recon is 45 nose into kerb. straight in and reverse out same angle much easier than driving past a spot and reversing back.

I think the law says you can't reverse park if you are parking on the highway. I think someone was booked for this on the Great Western Highway in Blackheath a few years back.

With a 130 the only way to park anywhere is to go in backwards. :D

I don't reves part the 130 into a parallel spot. If it can go strait in and leave room to drive strait out then I don't stop there. In parking lots I allways reverse into the spot so I can drive strait out. I also only use those 45 deg spots in Yass. I park around the corner instead.

The are not too many parallel parking situations where you can drive a Defender in forwards!

Make the impatient buggers wait! :D

Parallel parking is the preferred method according to the hand book however driving forward into a spot is obviously permitted if there is room but there are a couple of issues with forward parking. You simply can't get into the spot at the correct distance from the kerb without many back & forth moves all the while holding up the through traffic and the one issue that will get you fined if caught is in fact running your front wheel up onto the kerb, this area is a foot path and vehicles are prohibited from driving on them. All parking arrangements are governed by local council by-laws which change from town to town, jurisdiction to jurisdiction so if they want you to parallel or reverse park at what ever angle that is what you have to do

Cheers,

Peter.

Naah. You probably got beeped for being too slow, or holding up the impatient drivers, or maybe you actually were breaking some minor road rule foreigners don't know. With the amount of traffic in the U.K. (remember how a 4 mile trip through London can take a whole hour or more?) we tend to get VERY impatient at YET ANOTHER HOLDUP!!!!!!! ;)

Actually we're taught to reverse parallel park, as Fishguts said it's faaaar more efficient. And you are allowed to parallel park either side of the street - ie. facing into the oncoming traffic.

I really like the angled car parking here, and the low traffic.

They re-designed the whole main street in Wagga many years back now and it all changed from parallel parking to 45 degree nose in parking, so much easier.

In Bathurst most of it is 45 degree reverse in parking.

But as to the OP's question you can drive into a paralell parking space any way you can, Stacey wont park in them unless she can drive straight in.
