View Full Version : De-Badging cars

Saw yet another car today with the rear 'model' badges removed.
Every car I've seen like this has been a 'poverty pack' where I guess the owner was embarrassed by the fact that he couldn't afford the top-of-the-range model.
Is it just me or is it only the pov pack models that get de-badged ? It certainly makes a statement about the owner.

probably more that the poverty pack vehicles don't have the badges securely attached so its easier for thieves to steal them. On some of the higher end cars eg a rolls the emblem drops down into the radiator/grille so that they are unable to be stolen. The old Merc emblem used to get broken off quite easily. Possibly also depends on where the vehicle is being parked.

In europe I noticed that most manufacturers are now switching to minimalist badging on cars. e.g. most VW / Audi / BMW just have 1 badge front and rear and no model badges.

In Germany it's quite common for top end cars to be sans badges. Goes back to the hijacking / kidnapping days in the 70s.
Me, I used to remove them if I think they'll be nicked. Don't now, coz I can't find them. Somewhere under the house, about 20 yrs in...

Some manufacturers charge extra to deliver a car unbadged, and it's not just the Pov packs. I know of some high end automobiles with no "sponsorship badges"

Most I've seen still have the Ford badge for example but the TX or SX is removed so you don't know it's the pov. pack.

As with everything Holden or Ford, even the high spec ones are essentially pov packs in comparison to real automobiles.

We quite often sell base TDV6 Sports & the owner wants the SUPERCHARGED badge fitted.
They're usually one nationality & have a preference for black cars with 22" or 24" wheels..........

Interestingly I noticed in Japan last week that Toyota is only putting the Toyota badge on the back of many new models and uses different model-specific badges on the front. Not sure if they plan to do that here or if it's just a Japan thing.

BMW have been doing this for years in the UK, ( no cost option ) it was not always the low specs either.
I suppose its a bit of a sob thing too, just like having a number plate saying SLK 300, do these people forget what type of car there driving??

As said below it has been an option to have a car de badges at delivery for many years. Is driven by the car park race which you have to live here to understand. What car you drive denotes your place (read class) in society. The rungs go down to the trim level so a debadged car can give you an advantage. Took me a while to figure out why you were always asked what car you drove in job interviews. Make is important as well. Life is too short !!!!
Have van customers who debadge as it keeps them looking clean for longer. Dirt catches around the badge then runs down with the rain leaving dirty marks.
Problem comes at trade in time as car be difficult to identify if is not your brand so a low offer is usually made to be on safe side. Auctions really hit them price wise for same reason.

Do Honda and Toyota owners still pay a small fortune to have the badges replaced with gold coloured ones?

When I was a sales rep in the UK I couldn't believe the attention that was paid to what model/trim car you had. Get a group of reps together and they spoke about cars before sport etc.
From memory the repmobiles (typical sales rep cars) came in several different engine sizes, fuel injection was only on certain models and there were many different trim levels. For one car model there would be 10 or more variants.
People would choose a smaller car to get the top-of-the-range model rather than the poverty pack in the bigger car. Sales guys would switch jobs to get a 'better' model car.
Toyota owners pay an absolute fortune for the same car with gold badges, they're called Lexus:D

I know people put an XR8 bonnet on an XR6 Falcon and then remove the badges so people think its a V8.

That makes no sense, for many years the XR6 was better (and faster!)

We had it done to the VT wagon as it made it look a slot slicker, but also had the body panels rolled. No one really knew what it was. Yes it was a so called poverty pack but was ordered with all the fruit and was much better than a SS equivalent. Performance and body wise it was better than a Clubby so definately was not just to hide what it was. The only badges left on it were the Holden circle badges, no V8 badge nothing in the end.
I was not ashamed of having a executive as it had more fruit but cost a lot less than an SS sedan, the wagons had not even come out when we bought it so it was unique. When they did come out the following year the equivalent was $56k without the $3500 exhaust and $2000 gauges and the body kit was not as good, neither were the wheels and they were only 185kw. The wagon had Senator alloys, HSV full body kit, was dynoed at 226kw at the rears, full open exhaust and performance mods.
So there are other reasons.

They would try and drop your trade price but it is absolute rubbish as the car can be identified by vin number, compliance plates and log books.

Still are much better value for money, I could have bought a BA XR8 in schmick condition up here for $18k last week. Cars are way more expensive up here too.
The same model XR6 sells for more.
The BA XR6 Turbo was nearly the car that turned us to the dark side as they were to be quite honest a perfect package at the right price. Thought better of it and bought a Statesman. The XR6 Turbo is the one that is quicker than the XR8, the XR6 standard is not.
