G'day all!
Now my Disco is really trying to upset me as the truck has started leaking from the rear diff casing, where the prop shaft enters. Assuming it is the pinion seal (please correct me if I'm wrong), how much work is it to rectify the problem? My Haynes manual is very secretive about it and the workshop manual quotes use of special tools. Anyone here who has attempted that task and succeeded? Anyone having the spares numbers as my EPC decided not to work today... :-(. Please give me your opinion/advice.

Cheers

I did a step by step write up with photos when I replaced the pinion seal on my RRC. If you do a search you chould be able to find it. There will be slight differences if you are running the rubber propshaft coupling.

Before going to the trouble of replacing the seal check that the breather isn't blocked.

Hi Jojo, The seal usually starts leaking for two reasons. 1. it has been damaged. ie dirt has worn it out or a stick etc has got up there. 2. The pinion bearings are worn and now have no pre load and are allowing the pinion shaft to move which is flogging away at the seal, hence it is now leaking. The seals are easy enough to replace one you get the nut undone! If it is leaking for the 2nd reason it will start leaking again... soon. But check the breather first.
