I love this comment:eek:

Brisbane is distinguished by its weather. Typically on the warm side. The city has some unique road layouts because of the way the river runs through it. Bondi Beach, the big surfer spot, is less then an hour away. Also the Glass House Mountains aren't that far from Brisbane and are absolutely worth a day trip. Brisbane unfortunately has also been hit hard by flooding this year.

Funny stuff:D

Come see Perth it's just a short hop further :p

Sydney Melb and Brissy are like any large city, anywhere around the world, I'm not a big fan of any of them, especially Sydney.

If I was to move to a city in Australia, I would pick either Perth, Hobart or Launceston.

The differences between the cities is great(both meanings:D),, Both Sydney and Melbourne were occupied very early in OZ history while QLD was seen as more of a remote holiday destination(and still is by most Vics:angel::wasntme:),, typically British imports went to a climate similar to there own,,
If it wasnt for the discovery of Gold at Gympie,, QLD might have folded.

(please do not base your childs history lessons on this--;))

Brisbane had a penal settlement from about 1824 and free settlers started moving into the area from 1835. Melbourne had no permanent European settlement until 1833 (ignoring the failed attempt of 1803), so Brisbane clearly preceded Melbourne in terms of early settlement. That said, the development of Brisbane was much slower than Melbourne. Melbourne was officially declared a city in 1847 but Brisbane not until 1902. Sydney was certainly way ahead of them both. I like all three places. Each has its charms and warts. I would be happy to live in any of them.

Ditto. Although I once lived in Canberra (early 1980's) and liked it, so doesn't say much for my taste. Semi lived in Parkes for 1 week per month. Loved it.

Sydney was first settled 1788 and is the oldest. Melbourne exploded in terms of growth in the 1850s with the gold rush which saw Melbourne become one of the biggest cities at that time.

The weather is determined by the latitude Brisbane at 27 degrees south has the warmest weather and Melbourne at 38 degrees south has the coolest weather. Sydney at 34 degrees south is somewhere in between. While Sysdney gets more rain than Melbourne, Sydney gets it in big doses whereas Melbourne can get it over longer periods and lesser doses. Being closer to the source of much of the weather in the southern hemisphere the Antartica influences the weather of Melboourne a lot more especially in the winter. Brisbane can be a bit humid so Sydney probably has the pick of the weather.

The habour in Sydney and the river in Brisbane dictate the road layout which is subject to twists and turns whereas Melbourne is pretty flat and therefore is a pretty boring grid pattern of roads. Lots of garden space in Melbourne and wide streets which may not be the case elsewhere.

Yes Melbourne is said to be the cultural centre and a foodies delight although I think that Sydney would have an equal claim to a foodie heaven and has all the sights of the harbour that the tourist love. Brisbane has come a long way in the last couple of years and has grown in many ways.

I have lived in Melbourne for most of my life and spent time in all the major cities with Perth the least followed by Brisbane. Have also lived overseas for a few years. My family is here and my wife's near by so that as much as anything determined where we have lived. There is no one best place to live, you have to take what you like in a city and test it out on what we have in each of our favourite places.

Launceston was I think the second permanent settlement after Sydney, then I think Hobart, in terms of old world charm, friendly people, beautiful rugged coastline and pristine mountain areas, it's pretty hard not to love antthing about Tassie and it's two major cities.

AND if you ride a motorbike, well you'll be in 7th heaven:D

Norfolk Island, I think. A section of the First Fleet left almost immediately to go find ships mast trees.

Sydney has the best work options, but it's really two cities - east and west of town hall basically. Like the east, hate the west.
Melbourne is pretty boring and pretentious, but the food and coffee are great.
Brisbane is still a really big country town, but at least it's only an hour from the beach north and south.
Problem with all these cities is almost everything shuts by 6pm, unlike most other parts of the world where you can shop until 10-11pm.
