Guys
I have a friend looking at buying a Series 3 wagon that has a Falcon XF motor and a Cabstar 5 speed in it.
Has anyone ever had this combo if so what sort of mileage did you get out of it
Regards

I do know a bloke who attempted to go around Australia in a LandRover with a Marks 4wd conversions Cabstar box. He went through 4 of them, and told me the only reason he didn't go through more was because he ran low on money and had to fit an old series 3 box that he found at the Bamaga rubbish tip. Not enough bearing support at the back of the mainshaft apparently.

For the record and future searches
The Cabstar Gearbox had an issue that was addressed by the fitting of sealed bearings at the top of the box.
Not sure exactly what this means but the owner has used it successfully for over 10years after this modification

Do you still have the 107 pickup in your Avatar? Most visually attractive model they ever made IMO.

Had a mate with a 327 chev in a G60 patrol with a marks cabstar conversion. He had to rebuild the box 3 times. After the 2nd time the box was thoroughly checked by a fitter. The layshaft and mainshaft were not paralell! These boxes are a bit like the series box in that the front layshaft bearing is in the bellhousing. These were cast up and machined by marks adaptors. A concentric bush was made for the front of the layshaft bringing it back into line. No more problems after that.
