Well, the 18" Compomotive rims organised by Gordon at GOE have arrived! Mine rocked up at 7.30 am today, and by 11 am I had them fitted with the Goodyear SilentArmor 265/60 R18s that had come from TireRack earlier in the week. All went well - and I've posted pics below.

The guys who did the job (Beaurepaires here in Albany) appeared to do an excellent job - worth giving them a plug, given the bollocking dished out to dodgy operators in RMP's thread! Even tried a rim front and back before fitting the tyres, to check for clearance: about 1-2 mm from the brake calipers was the outcome. Wheel nuts were tightened with a torque wrench, not the air gun, and balance weights were carefully placed on the inside so that they didn't get wiped off by the calipers. Very impressed.

Too early to say much about the tyres - other than I reckon they look pretty cool, as do the rims! Will post up more info after a decent run later today or tomorrow. But for now I'd like to register a huge vote of thanks to Gordon for landing this one  :clap2:

And yes, they do fit into the spare wheel well without deflating - but you do need to remove the tow hitch first. And as far as I can tell no rubbing on full lock - tho I haven't given it a thorough workout yet. So at this stage - all good!! :D

Good to know they fit, how much did they cost and how did you get Compomotive to sell them to you?

How much did they cost? Umm - good question! It was quite a while ago, but I think it was $330 each landed in Perth (plus freight from there). That figure may be different now. And no, mine were from this first batch brought into Oz by Green Oval Experience. Just a quick comment about tyre prices - best local quote I could find on the Goodyears was $480 each, but the five I brought in from TireRack cost me $310 each, delivered to my door here in Albany. Go figure...

Cant wait for mine to arrive. They look great on your D4.

That is a very nice looking rim.
Congrats on the purchase they suit the vehicle very well.

Gordon, big:thumbsup: for some input & organising this, it will make a lot of D4 owners who wish to use their vehicle at its full potential extremely happy & they will enjoy it even more now.

Cheers.

Had intended to make comment about the outgoing Pirelli Scorpions (255/55R19) before they faded from memory - I have done close to 44,000 km on them, and as best we could estimate they were about two-thirds worn. This would mean they would most likely have topped 60k, which I reckon is pretty reasonable given the weight of the vehicle. I have no complaints about them, other than feeling slightly exposed in really rough stuff - tho they never let me down. I'm happy to now have the extra sidewall height, and a more robust tread pattern - but if you're sticking with the 19s then I'm happy to recommend the Pirelli's as a good all rounder.

Just a quick update with some info & feedback after a decent drive on the highway. Firstly, the slightly increased rolling diameter has partially corrected the speedo error: with the old 19's my speedo was about 5-6 km enthusiastic (showing 115 kph was actually a real 110 kph by my gps), and that has now been reduced to 3-4 kph error. So, a "real" 110 kph is now showing 113/114, and the same down at 80 and 60 - between 3 and 4 kmh over real speeds.

However, there does not appear to have been any change to the incorrect odometer reading discussed in a separate thread a month or two back. 100 km on the odo is actually a real 103.4 km by the gps - same under-read as before. Weird but true - the speedo and the odo must pick up their info from different sources.

And lastly, a comment on the Goodyear SilentArmors - virtually no noise increase over the Pirelli's, other than maybe the faintest hum which is perhaps slightly more noticeable around town than on the highway. Handling on bitumen seems fine, and ride does not appear to have changed significantly (running cold pressures of 35/37 psi). So far, so good. Very relieved about the noise issue, and looking forward to a decent play in the scrub.

Jesse, why the change from the Pirelli's?
The Silent Armors appear less agressive.

Craig: interesting observation! I see it the other way round - Pirelli on the left, Goodyear on the right, both brand new:

https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2011/03/861.jpg

I went for the Goodyear's partly because I wanted to go with 265/60 in 18 inch, to get the extra width & sidewall height and the Pirelli is a 255/60 in the 18". Also, I wanted a slightly more aggressive tread pattern - and felt the Goodyear offered that, without getting into the likely noisier options. For what it's worth, Goodyear claims the SilentArmor to be 50/50 on/off road - not that these splits are terribly reliable! The Pirelli in the pic was my back-up casing, so as already mentioned is now going cheap...

Having had both tyres on my D2 (in LT form), IMO the SA is far better than the ATR in the slippery stuff.

I was just looking at the Silent Armour's on the web site.

They are load rated at 109. The requirement for 18's on the D4 is 112. Would this lower than spec load rating cause an issue with an insurance claim?

Jesse,
I can now see from your photos that the Goodyears are more aggressive.
When I looked at them on the web, they didn't appear that aggressive.
Looks like a pretty good choice.

Cheers, Craig

I took the perspective quoted by rmp in the "Tyre placard" thread - that the minimum allowable rating was the lowest listed on the placard (irrelevant of size) - being 109. This was also the minimum allowable for the D3, and while as Robert pointed out this catch-all statement appears to have vanished with the D4 it still helped make me feel comfortable that my choice would stand up well enough.

From a purely practical perspective my only insurance claim ever was in 1975 (roo strike) and I know it's tempting fate but I'm not proposing to break this sequence any time soon. And in any case, the only issue could be if the claim were to come about because of a blown tyre that could be sheeted back to overloading (highly unlikely in my case) - that is, if the logic of my first para does not hold up!

Thanks for the feedback.

I am looking at the Continental ContiCrossContactâ„¢ AT tyres for my D4. But your positive report on the Goodyear's made me reconsider that.

I will be towing a big heavy van so for me at least the higher load rating might be a better choice.

Hi mowog.
LR don't differentiate between towing and not. Therefore the LR load rating is appropriate for a D4 towing 3500kg with a towball load up to 350kg.

Best Wishes,
Peter

My rims arrived today... :D

I am going for Continental tyres for my rims. Not sure when I will get it done but it has to be before May.

Put the silent armies on today: the rims and tyres really complement the car.
First impresions of the SA are good; quieter than the wranglers they replaced and nice ride.
Cheers,
Peter :)

Late review of the tires and rims.
Have mine on order.
But a question from left field.
What is your Roo Bar brand?.
Its looks very neat and tidy.

Hello Rodjam,

It's a steel job from Opposite Lock, powdercoated to match the car. There's a thread from about 18 months ago that goes into a bit of detail about this bar and its twin brother, the ARB version - there's very little difference between the two.

I've been really happy with my set-up, and I'm sure OL have sorted the installation issues I had with mine - it was the first fitted on a D4 I think.

Hi Jesse,
I could not pick what it was!
Thank you for that info.
Planning the ad dons for when the D4 arrives.
Rims are ordered.
Many thanks.

Hey guys,

New D4 3.0l owner. I'm looking at these wheels as I need a second set for offroad (I want to get my stock 19"'s powder coated black for town ;) )

The Green oval site has them listed for $530 a rim which is way more than the original price quoted back in 2011 in this thread. Does anyone know where I can get them cheaper? Or if there's other alternatives since this thread was first started?

Appreciate any advice!

Hmm .......

Well, no - you can only get them through me. The original landed price I charged was $390 each, but due to a horrific misunderstanding on my part with the factory, that didn't include taxes and shipping. The real price would have been closer to $490 - I lost a fortune on the first 2 shipments :(

Since then alloy price rises in the UK have incremented the price. They are not your normal "bling" alloys - they're designed for off-road competition work. If you don't think they're worth the cost, consider putting better 19" AT tyres on your vehicle.

Cheers,

Gordon

Ah thanks Gordon, sorry I wasn't having a go, just wondering why there's such a price delta now, but it all makes sense!

I'll shoot you an email once i'm looking to order :)

/thread hi-jack

Welcome Ben! Glad you finally signed up. Altho the best decision you've made lately was to buy the D4. :D The rate at which my new County is coming along, we might just have to do a trip with the Disco's. ;) The County is becoming more of a long term project every day.... lol

Rims look great :) I'm close to buying a set of 6 for mine. I don't suppose anyone has decent pics of the three compomotive rims (black/silver/anthracite) on a Nara Bronze vehicle? Have google and thus far found only the black.

Thanks for the photo the black wheels look better than I imagined.

Looks like 265/65/18 BFG's - they look in proportion with plenty of sidewall.

SWMBO has OK'd wheels & tyres which I will get just prior to tax time.

Having said that went up to Wandong today & the 19" GG AT's went well.

Was that a Landrover winch kit on the D4?

discotwinturbo
6th April 2013, 11:01 PM
The reason I went for the 285/60-18 was due to them being the standard 200 series size. I rang a couple of regional tyre dealers and they had this size in stock, but not the BFG's in the 265/65-18 size.

Not sure about the winch kit.

I still get people looking at my D4 and saying "Hey 18's don't fit on a 3.0L D4!"

My response... THEY DON'T! :wasntme: ;)

Great wheel I am so glad I got in on the first buy.

I had the same response from southerns at my last service when they saw them on the D4.
