When removing the alternator in my discovery today, i noticed when spun by hand it has a really rough sound, which says to me the bearings are stuffed

has anyone swapped a higher output alternator in place of the factory one? i figured while everything is apart, now would be the time to do it

With the V8 there is a Boach direct replacement.

ok, so upon closer inspection, i have a bosch alternator already in it, the number is 9 190 057 005, does anyone know what car this would be from originally? and maybe how much a replacement would be?

is it possible to rebuild them?

Can't give you an application exactly but basically the strength of the Bosch alternator is its rebuildability. So there is a huge range of swappable alternator parts to choose from, ranging from 40A output to about 120A versions. Just take it to a sparkie and ask for a cost-effective rebuild/upgrade.

They used to say that Bosch alternators were that common you could buy one from the corner butcher shop :D

Wish the defender ones were the same :(
