Disk Hand Brake

Like many LT95s and other landie transfer cases mine leaks a bit from the rear output shaft. I have replaced the seal, felt seal and used a bit of silastic a few times which usually stops the leak but in a couple of thousand Kms it is back leaking into the hand brake drum. The leak in itself is not a worry but it seriously degrades the ability of the handbrake to work as it is supposed to.

As a solution I was thinking about a disk brake conversion for the hand brake that are available from the UK. Has anyone fitted one of these and how do you find them - and is it worth doing the conversion. A brake drum can handle a whack from a rock but what happens if you get caught up on the brake disk.

I have one, seems fine, worth the money is upto you, Ben has one also, but his is working intermittedly, not sure if its resolved

I adjusted the cable all the way up, and it works, but varies between 6 and 9 clicks fully on. Now that has changed to between 7 and 10... And I have run out of adjustment on the cable. One of these days I will have to remove it and see what the issue is...

I'm amazed at how common this problem seems to be and how difficult it is to fix it. I've just done mine, there wasn't any groove or scratching on the flange and the new (genuine) seal went in fine - yet it still seems to be leaking. I'm hoping it's just some residual oil/petrol from when I cleaned the handbrake area - if not, I think I'll just fork out for the 2 hours labour and they can keep fixing it free-of-charge until it stops leaking!

This also makes me wonder what sort of rear output seal designs are in other makes of 4WD that don't seem to have this problem.

Ive replaced many of these and half the time its not the seal at fault its the casing. Ive seen many seals removed with a big screw-driver which inturn has scratched the casing! No matter what you do after that it will leak!

As for the handbrake conversion. YES, its definately worth it. Sure you need to adjust them now and again, but at least when you pull it on, the vehicle stays where it should!

Which reminds me, need to adjust mine this weekend;)
