Freelander woes (heard that one before?)

Hiya All, I've just replaced my crunched VW on a total whim with a Freelander '02 V6. Didn;t do my due diligence. HGF two days after I bought it. under warranty though so they're fixing it as I type - but thought I might seek some independent advice - they say the water pump cracked and so it overheated and the gasket blew - what should they doing by way of repair? not quite sure what questions I should be asking them to make sure they don;t bodge it to get it through the warranty period....... also where can I get the low level coolant warning and how much should I pay?

Assuming it gets going, I'm planning on tarting it up with some 3dr roof rails and fancy driving lights (not shallow or anything) - any ideas as to best aftermarket suppliers to go to?

That said I still love it even if it dropped me like third grade french - the only other 5 seater convertible I could find was a new Jeep: 30k more, drinks like a fish with a hangover and styled by a by someone who's heard a car described but never actually seen one...

A Low Level Coolant Sensor/Alarm costs about $180 if you buy it to fit yourself. I had one fitted to my Freelander V6 in September of last year and it cost $387 all up, with labour. You should be able to organize one through any good 4X4 Repair Shop, but not being a local to your area, I can't help you there. As for the rest of your questions, I am sure somebody will be along soon, who can advise.

Ask them what the cylinder liner protrusion was. I should be between 0mm and 0.075mm proud. If they cant give you a answer or it is out of these specs the head gasket will blow again.

Might be worth getting the cam belts done while this is being sorted out? Access to the water pump is a bit difficult, so might save some dollars down the road.
Check if the belts have been replaced and when.

There has also been some various minor upgrades to other cooling components (thermostat housing?) that might be worthwhile.

Cheers - got the thermostat replaced and the coolant reservoir but they were cagey on the liners - warranted it for 6 months though so fingers crossed....

They'd beat me to the fix before I saw the advice on the cambelts - maybe next time. Except I hope there isn't a next time.

Nice to have it back. Now to get it out and about - anyone know of any brisbane locations suitable for a total amateur with a softroader of dubious reliability?
