Looking at 02-05 L322's petrol & diesel . What are the common faults with this model and anything else to look out for
I LOVE my P38 but did the wrong thing the other day, drove an 03 4.4 Vogue just to see if I could fit and what it was like, huge improvement :):)so if the bank balance can streach would like too upgrade.
Wifes comment was " Knew you would like it ".:)
One deisel I'm looking at has about 190,000km is that a problem.
Thanks in advance for your help & comment's

The only problem with the RR You are looking at is i want to buy it as well!
Im in the same boat as you and looking for an L322.
It seems most of the cheaper ones are a bit beaten up on the inside, boy people certainly dont look after things do they.
I have driven quite a few and have not noticed too many faults on them, even with high milage on them.
One big positive on these things is the parts are much cheaper than they are for a P38.
I think i would be buying a fault mate if i get one.Probably a good idea to plug into any intended purchase.

Hi Pat
You have TD6 is that correct. Did you consider the 4.4 BMW V8. If not why not

I found my Td6 in the condition I wanted at the price I wanted to pay,if I found a good 4.4 I would seriously look at it if I was in the market.Saying that I do think the 2002-04 Td6 L322's are the best 4wd wagon ever sold in Australia by more than a country mile. Pat

Hi there,
I have an 02 4.4 vogue. I have been very happy with it so far. Its long term average has been 14.5ltr/100. My wife and I love driving it especially on long trips with the vogue seats and extra's. Shortly I will be going on a trip up from Melb - oodnadatta track, Finke to Alice Springs towing a camping trailer. I will let you know how it goes. But if your going to do short trips in town it starts to cost a bit in fuel.
I have looked at late model Nissan Patrols and wouldn't trade the L322 for any of them. I payed under 30K with 170km's, full service history and everything works inside it and interior has been looked after as well. Alot of people don't want the 4.4 vogue has it can be heavy on petrol but it is very good value for money. These cars where 155K back in 02.

Thanks for your thoughs Paul.
We live in the country, about 30km's from nearest town. It will be used as a second car and to tow a 24' van[ still to decide which make but not Jayco] Waiting on right buyer for our small dairy herd Before going into semi retirement and doing some travelling.
Drove an 02 4.4 Vogue in Melbourne last week Beautiful 136,000 km's but over priced at about $55,000 Excelent condition and a vast improvement on my P38.

Has anybody towed a 24" van with 4.4 vogue or TD6. If so can you give a rough estimate of fuel consumption figures for both please. My heart keeps saying 4.4 but my head says TD6. Like them both but for different reasons. Have found what I think a couple of good ones each way. So still undecided.

P.s that will mean my beloved P38 will be for sale hint hint PM for details

Weve had both, td6 is winner hands down.
4.4 against td6 from the lights one to two car lengths in it. (Petrol winner)
But consider 500kms too a tank in 4.4, and always above 850kms too a tank in the td6 usually 950 odd, ive had 1100 before.
And that you can chip up the td6.... i would say it would out run the 4.4 then.
Towes great. Had too tow my p38 when it broke down with the td6 and its as if it wasnt even on the trailer behind it :)

Hi Guys,
I just sold my TD5 99 Disco which was a absolute treasure and was and is a great car.I bought a 02 HSE 4.4 and yes I was cautious, but the car is in pristine condition and paid $37K, with 162Klm on the clock, full service, was a Land Rover dealers wifes car.So shopping trolley in Bris.
I live in the country and it drives a absolute treat.
That V* rumble is hard to beat, and when pulling a van, really verbs up.
Apples for Apples I would go V8 over Diesel.I pulled my Coromal Van, 18 foot fully laiden and at mainly hwy speed 100kph and still got just on 500 klms.
Big secret is not braking too hard, or travelling to close, as to pick up speed from rolling down, takes a hit on the tank.
Just being a bit smarter than the average joe.
Good luck, you'll love the v8 or deisel

Thanks guys.Well I did it yesterday bought an 04 TD6 HSE. Very nice. Traded My P38 in. Too good of a deal to pass up. Still it was a bit more than I intended to spend. Went with my head in getting a TD6 and not a V8.

Just a bit of an upgrade!
Good choice.. I have had mine for over a month now and love it:D Its the best motor choice for a range rover IMO.
Ive always owned V8's.. never again after buying this car;)

Adding to this thread I just want to say that i have now had my 03 TD6 for 7/8 months and after owning two very nice highly modified Nissan Patrols (which are great trucks) and many other Toyota's the rangie is in a class of its own
I drive very easy and always try to achieve the best consumption figures i possibly can, On long distance trips from Sydney to Melbourne sitting on 100kph i can return about 8 liters per 100k no worries at all which is just astounding for a 2.5 plus tonne truck. On top of that the power and torque of the engine just blows me away :p.. very impressed!!
I should also add that my rangie had 215k ks on the clock when i brought it and it now has 240 and it runs like clockwork, I change the oil & filter every 5 thousand k,s or sometimes even less/ replaced the crankcase breather filter yesterday and at some stage (yet to find out) the transmission was rebuilt and it shifts like a dream however i am about to give it the oil and filter change just to keep everything clean and happy
I did quite some research on the bmw m57 engine before i brought a TD6 rangie and i honestly could not find a bad word about them, quite the opposite actually;) . It appears to me that bmw really did their homework when they designed the M57
Happy motoring'

Anyway TD6 Rangies. Yes the M57 diesel is one top unit :p. A mate of mine that recently did a trip down from qld in hes 06 jeep Cherokee was proudly telling me how he achieved 15 liters per 100k on the way down as he was admiring the Rangie, Well he almost fell over when i told him i can all but halve that in the TD6 rangie no worries at all :p
I honestly believe that i could get behind the wheel of any brand new top of the range Nissan or Toyota and it would feel like a piece of junk compared to my 03 L322 :), The machine continually impresses me and this weekend it may even see some minor offroad action as i will be camping up at Barrington with the camper trailer in tow
As you may well know Pat the M57 won international engine of the year several times and many other awards and is still in production obtaining these'

I have had my Td6 '02 model for nearly three years now. I've just returned from a 4300 km trip to Flinders Ranges and back. Did some proper 4wding up there, including the Mt Gill Track. The RR was fabulous for the long days' driving, and amazing off road. My friend in his Defender got stuck three times whereas the RR with traction control did it all with ease.
Best vehicle I have ever owned but I have had to spend a fair bit on maintenance. It had 160,000 km on it when I bought it and now has 198,000. I had to replace the front airbags and struts, drop links and lower bushes. Had a few electrical/electronic issues as well, including alarm triggering (front bonnet switch), air con fan failure (relay), and an aircon flap motor linkage. Also have a few of the known faults ie driver armrest, MID display pixel failure.
The engine and gearbox seem bulletproof however, and it is such a great car to drive both on road and off. I have done off road trips to Vic High Country, Bendethera, Blue Mts, Stockton Beach, etc and it is always amazing off road, and just so nice to drive around town and on the highway. Every other vehicle seems rough-riding and harsh by comparison.
Hope you enjoy your new vehicle as much as I've enjoyed mine.

Hi Davros,
Your trips sound interesting and its great to hear that these l322 Rangies do get to go offroad with some owners. I plan on doing a trip shortly which may see me towing my camper trailer all over vic/nsw/qld for possibly a couple of months or more if i can spare the time
I just returned from Barrington and once again the Rangie did not miss a beat although i did not go too serious offroad as i still have highway terrain tires fitted which will be getting swapped over for new coopers hopefully next week
Also interested in your flap motor linkage problem?.. I noticed tonight that the passenger side footwell in my car does not get much air flow at all compared to the drivers side which i will have to diagnose and fix. What were your symptoms?
I hear its lovely in the flinders. Would love to see some Rangie offroad/ travel pics ;)

Thanks Dave. I am still looking, trying to find a low KM TD6 in top condition. I had a great vehicle ready to go, but my (ex) bank took forever to approve to dollars I needed, and it got sold :(. Now I have the funding approved, but haven't found 'The one' just yet....
I am being patient, and waiting until the right vehicle pops up.
Cheers.

Good thinking mate
I was lucky as only took 2 months to find mine.. was about to give up and just get a V8 Vogue as a much easier to find (and cheaper). Glad I found the TD6 for the right price. Took it to Gladstone last weekend.. 1500k trip and was brilliant.. averaged 9 litres per 100k. Can't wait to take it on a decent trip soon.
Done 10,000k's in the last 2 months and still look forward to driving it to work every morning.. Best car I've ever had (or driven) by far.

PS. one will come up .. just gotta be patient

The a/c flap motor problem manifested when I found I cannot close the fresh air flaps and get recirculating air. Investigation in behind the pollen filter showed that the fresh air flap only closes on one side. Looking at the RAVE disc, and talking to service mechanic led to the knowledge that there is a single motor on one side (working), and the other side is connected by a cable (bowden or bowen cable?). The service guy thinks the most likely is that the cable sheath has come loose and is sliding around when the cable is pulled, instead of pulling the second flap. To fix he says the dash has to come out to access things and it would be very expensive, so I am putting up with it. Just means I can't shut out the smell of a garbage truck or oil-burning vehicle in front.
Dave, I will be interested to hear your report on Cooper tyres for the L322. I have Pirelli Scorpion ATRs and have been really happy with them. They are especially good on gravel and I can't criticise their offroad performance. 35,000 kms so far - they are good.

265/60r18. They were very noisy, very little grip, tram tracked something shocking, numb steering, did I mention no grip…
When I was looking for a L322 I drove many. The vehicle I eventually purchased is in absolutely immaculate condition and ticked all the boxes – except how it drove. The only reason I took it was because I had tested another vehicle with the same tyres and passed on it because of its manners – I really thought something was wrong, when reviewing my notes (which included tyre details) these two vehicles drove noticeably worse than the others, so I took the gamble that it was the tyres that were to blame, everything else was perfect – thankfully I was right.
If the first L322 I drove was one of these two, I probably would have stopped looking and purchased a D3. I was amazed at the difference in driver experience...

I presume they were Cooper ATR's. This was one of the tires I was thinking of fitting. What do you have now. Report please on there progress

I bought L322 TD6 last September. Fantastic vehicle but I am interested in how you get so low a fuel usage. The best I have done is 10l/100k. I usually run around 12l/1ook and I drive with a very light foot. By the way. don't use the figures from computer. If I did I would be using around 8l/100k but work it out mathematically. These computers give misinformation, they read lower than actual usage. Jim

Mine reads perfect on long trips but remember your fuel usage changes all the time with day to day driving.I've crossed the nullaboring four times and it is accurate within a litre but thats sitting on 120k/hr for 10hrs straight. Pat

Hi, in my continuing search for the right vehicle, I will be looking at 2 more on the weekend. Both are 04 models with about 135K km on them & both diesel. I have asked the usual questions, and one of them has had the transmission serviced at 120K km. Now, I would think this would be a good thing, if done properly, with the right trannie fluid. What sort of questions should I be asking about this, and what should I be looking for on the invoices? He claims all work has been done by an LR dealer, but I would have thought an LR dealer would have given him the 'sealed for life' line...
Any thoughts?
