Interestingly they did not use the Landrover version of the 2.7TDV6 but the Jaguar twin turbo version - the engine that should have certainly gone into the RRS and maybe the D3.

The Puma is a bit of an orphan in the Landrover range being only in the Defender and logically the 2.7 single turbo would have been better in the Defender with the twin turbo versions in the RRS.

Very nice....pity it wasn't an option....although with a price for the conversion ($48,000) equivalent to the retail price of the original vehicle, probably not one that many people would take up.

It s catch 22 for LR and Defender.

Modernise the Defender with some punch like a D3 or 4 and keep in touch with Jap power. But then it would not be Defender, instead it would go like the clappers.

Can't help wonder what the sales figures would be if LR did drop a 2.7 into a Defender. I'd sign, but not for that conversion price.

As i said in another thread, thats the defender option we should have had 6 months after the disco 3 TDV6 hit the dealers. A tdv6 with auto or manual in a def, with serious off road gear, call it a highlander and market it like a jeep rubicon wrangler.

The article mentioned that fitting the Jaguar twin turbo V6 vice the LR single turbo was a no brainer as the LR engine was not available to them, whereas the Jag unit is, and the twin turbo was a much simpler fit in to Deefer engine bay. I noticed that there was some ancilliary real estate moved around.

Have contacted JE Engineering to see if they would make up a kit, with possibly the engine and auto sourced in Australia (save on freight for a start)...Jags are flogged here after all.

Hopefully, this may chop the price down a bit.....I have a ageing 130 TD5 that would love to catch up with its Disco3 stablemate.

I guess the plywood interior shot in the article is there to remind us of the Defender's utilitarian heritage.

How good is that !!!

If that was available in Oz I ‘d sign up in heart beat.

With that engine coupled with gear box and drive line up grade, a puma would be the ultimate.......

Time to start saving the penny's :D

I know where to source a fitting kit!
And custom ECU to suit :)

There is a D1 and P38 getting around with a TDV6

I'd say a fair amount of the cost came from using a new engine and making it comply with the emission laws, whereas over here all we need to do is wait for a tdv6 Jag to get rear-ended W.Off in the city by a delivery driver to get our hands on a cheaper tdv6. So whats the price of a D2 auto, and a conversion kit? Will I need to sell the house?:D

Highlander ...stop smoking pot lol!
I think Land Rover recognise it's a tractor but some of us are ok with that:p

I reckon with that amount of power and torque if you got stuck in soft sand to the axles, you could have it past the roof in no time lol;)

I would love a TdV6 in my series Landy.

I think you will find copyright law in Australia allows you to do this. For example, you can include an article but not the whole publication.
Now, let's all be happy and move on.

Now we have multiple choices thanks to ford!
A: the TDV6 from either a territory, a jag, a pug or another LR.
B: The TD5 the defender should have got that is built in the U.K then shipped to thailand and put into the new ford ranger(mazda bt50 twin under the skin) with 3.2L and 147Kw:o Instead LR went for the weaker/cheaper 2.2TD that the ranger will sell as the povo pack model! (also built in the same plant in the U.K!)
I love the defender but Is it only me that finds it insulting that LR are selling the defender with the poverty pack engine at a higher price than the cousin's with the premium power plant?

youd be suprised what a healthy 200tdi/300tdi would do to an 88inch. I know of one conversion done, using a 200tdi/R380/LT230 and had the axles widened to coil width....according to the installer and owner it went VERY well...pulling up Henry Roberts drive(very steep climb up to Mt tamborine) in 3rd no worries

You'd be supprised how well a an 88'' series goes with a worked over 2.25 petrol motor;).Mine could almost reach the tonne. Pat

dont worry, I know a guy that back in the day had to make new pushrods out of dualium (sp) and balance his top end in his "hopped" up 2 1/4 that was as known for shocking mini coopers
