Just wondering what is required for vehicle transfer. I am looking at purchasing a Landy which is privately owned. It is registered in NSW and I want to transfer into my name, I live in Victoria. The vehicle has had some modifications and engineers papers will provided by the owner. What else is necessary re papers etc to complete the process. I assume that I will also need a Vic RWC at my own expense to complete the process.

It's never a quick phone call to vic roads, ist you have to press the options on the phone, then the next and the next ,then you get someone you can't understand.

I found the service in the vic roads offices has improved 1000% over the old days, times I've gone in and took a ticket and before my bum even got to sit down my number was called, usually out very quickly, more efficient ,more staff, = more happy motoring, and that my friends is nothing to complain about:p

If the vehicle is unregistered and you need to drive it around to transport and get a roadworthy, get an unregistered vehicle permit. If you're driving from NSW to Vic, you'll have to get the permit in NSW. When I tried to get a NSW permit, they wouldn't give me one as I didn't have a NSW address. I had it transported on a truck. I used a Vic. permit to drive around to get the RWC. Check out the Vicroads site.
If the vehicle is registered, get the owner to fill out the transfer papers (on the back of the rego forms.
Previous rego details (the NSW ones) make it easy for the Vicroads people. You will also need the RWC. If they need to inspect the vehicle (they did for me), make sure the engine and VIN numbers are correct and easy to read on the vehicle.

Also, check with Vicroads if the engineers report is valid in Vic. Maybe some of the other forumites would have better info on that.

Hope this is helpful.
Whereabouts in Vic are you located?

Thanks for the reply 51jay, was trying to avoid that avenue. Rang them last year about new trailer registration in country Vic. Simple enough I thought. Had to get back to them three times and each time they gave me a different answer........

The Vic road web site is down at present, but I checked out registering interstate vehicles the other day ,re my Tassie purchase, it didn't say too much, but said ring some 13 number and have your credit card handy, the vin and engine and rego number of the car, they would them make an appointment for vic roads to inspect the car.
It did not mention rwc, and the bit about have your credit card ready threw me.
In Tas they don't have RWCs apparently when selling amd buying privately so If it is still registered in Tas and I ring them up at Vic roads, I wonder if I can get away with the RWC?

If you are moving to Victoria permanently, your vehicle needs to be registered here. You will also need to change your interstate or New Zealand licence (http://www.vicroads.vic.gov.au/Home/Licences/NewToVictoria/InterstateAndNZDriversLicences.htm) over to a Victorian licence after living in Victoria for more than three months.

What you need to do
To register your interstate vehicle in Victoria, call us on 13 11 71 (Mon-Fri 8.30am - 5pm, Sat 8.30am - 2pm) with your credit card ready (Visa or Mastercard) and the following information:

the VIN and engine number of your vehicle
your number plates
your current licence number.

We will organise a time for you to visit your local VicRoads Customer Service Centre (http://www.vicroads.vic.gov.au/Home/HaveYourSay/ContactUs/OfficeLocationsAndHours.htm) and register your vehicle.

For more information about registering your vehicle and what to bring to your appointment see light vehicle registration (http://www.vicroads.vic.gov.au/Home/Registration/WhatHasToBeRegistered/HowToRegisterYourVehicle/LightVehicleRegistration.htm)

Please note: From 1 January 2011, when new vehicles are first registered in Victoria, they must be fitted with electronic stability control (ESC). If you are moving to Victoria this requirement may affect you.

For more information about electronic stability control and transferring your vehicle registration to Victoria, see electronic stability control for interstate vehicles (http://www.vicroads.vic.gov.au/Home/Registration/NewToVictoria/ESCNewToVictoria.htm).

That applies if you already owned the vehicle at an interstate address. If you are buying it interstate, and the rego is not in your name, you will need a RWC.

Plan A is the day I receive it is to go to the road authority is Devonport, hand in the ownership /transfer papers and register it in my name to a Tasmanian address that I have , pay the transfer fees and stamp duty in tas,( So it is registered in my name at a tas address, then sail it over to Vic. The said vehicle will be techniquely registered in TAS with TAS plates, over here on a holiday so to speak once over here in due course will get it registered in Vic.

Just recently, I heard about a guy doing that with a W109 300SEL 6.3 Merc. Saw the Merc. It needed big dollars spent on it to get roadworthy.
What is the address? Can I live there? For rego purposes only. You understand.

I lived in Vic, got my car licence, then my L plates for a m/cycle. I road up to NSW on my then GSX250:angel:, booked in a oral licence test with the DMR, passed, went to cop shop and did practical, drive 100 yards and DON"T FALL OFF. PASSED! tok receipot back tyo DMr, no P plares required as had full Car licence, rode back to Vic fully fledged.
I had a NSW address as I spent a lot of time up in the snowys. Ended up somehow with NSW and Vic car licences as well, with ref to Vic licence on my NSWE car licence.
Probably not Kosher there days.

In my days driving line haul, I had licences and log books in three states. Fairly normal practice amongst truck drivers then but quite frowned upon nowadays when Qld. Transport won't even let you keep your current licence when you renew before the due date.

Hi,
you will be paying a tax in Tasmania when you transfer it to your Tasmanian name/address.
Will you then have to pay another tax when you transfer to the Victorian address?

cheers

That is not the case. As the vehicle has not changed hands, transfer duty does not apply. It also does not neet a RWC.
You do need to pay a transfer fee ($32.90) and plates ($30.60)

That Tassie address is looking good.

getting back to the original question :wasntme:
You will need to have the transfer papers completed by the current owner. (remember government departments like paperwork) then arrange to get a rwc. Once the rwc has been issued you will then need to make an appointment to get the car registered in vic. Vic roads will want to inspect the car and as said will check vin and engine numbers. Hand over lots of money for the inspection, vic plates, stamp duty and 12 months reg and be on your merry way.

Good luck with the rwc. basically any mods will need to be re-engineered here in vic ans vic roads have their approved list of vehicle engineers and dont accept a cert from anyone else. The guy doing the rwc knowing the car will be inspected by vic roads will be very picky so he doesn't put his rwc license at risk.
