Side steps fitment

Anyone able to tell me how the side steps are fitted to their Land Rover Discovery 2? Are the steps below the side skirts or do the steps replace the side skirts? Pictures would be greatly appreciated.

The reason I ask is that my vehicle does not have the side skirts any more. Instead it came with rock sliders there instead. I'm wanting a set of side steps to make it easier to get stuff on and off the roof, but am trying to determine weather they will fit with the rock sliders still in place, or if they will replace the rock sliders or if I will need to get a set of side skirts to fill the gap between the body and the side steps.

All the genuine and aftermarket steps I have seen leave the skirt in place and most fit under the skirt/trim strip. ARB side steps fit level and oustside of the skirt. All but the ARB units reduce the ground clearance, often by more than 2 inches.

Genuine steps have brakets and hardware to mount from the body to chassis, attach points. Most aftermarket jobs (kingsley etc) have "tek screws" at the top and 6mm bolt and nut at the bottom(drilled through the body sill seam joint) of each bracket (3 x step) ARB steps mount at 2 points to the chasis out riggers.

If you want to keep the sliders maybe you could weld some extra brackets to these?

Yeah, what I'm thinking is two options at the moment, the first is to hit the wreckers and find some reasonably decent and correct size side steps and fit them to the rock sliders or to completely make my own (I'm thinking checkered plate top with steel under for the support) - either of these options will as you have pointed out, have the advantage of not reducing ground clearance.

I have had 2 different types of steps.

The originals were made by a mate for me, and mounted below the plastic sill.

When these were ripped off in an accident (Disco - 1, Hyundai - 0) I had a set of Kingsley fitted as part of the insurance. These were fitted below the sill as well, but I found them too low.

I have since removed the sill, and put the Kingsley back on. It took a bit of cutting, but they fit well.

With them mounted a little higher, I now dont have the ground clearance issues I had before.

You can have bar welded on to your metal sliders to create a step.. That way best of both worlds, some have even put checker plate over the top to fill in the gap between the bar and slider. that way you do not sacrifice clearance have strong protection, jacking point and a step to easily gain access... someone must have a photo... I think they call them tree protectors because they help push tree branches away from panels more than just a slider.
