Sitting out the back, during the day, and this mosquito [ looked very much like one] landed on my coffee cup. Now, this was a big fella, with GREEN stripes down its back.[ the rum bottle was nowhere in sight] Didn't have the camera, so no photo, but I've never seen one this colour before. Not one of those dengue ones is it? He was a mean looking begger, took a couple of bundies to settle the nerves Bob.

Same dark black body, different colouration, stripes instead of spots, will do my best to get a photo. [ wasn't your arm, was it?] Bob

Very interesting, nasty critter, doesn't look like it is supposed to be down here though. The insect I saw had definite stripes, might be a kind of small wasp. Going to take a trip into the Qld. Museum and see if anyone there has an idea, [good excuse to go to the Irish club] Bob.

G'day Bob10 :)
It wouldn't be one of those very thin long legged ones,a little like a "daddy long legs" spider, similar size, with greenish stripes the length of it's body? we have them up our way, northern end of depression bay ;) quite harmless, spend most of their time resting on the shrubry, don't bite us, soundless, just fly around a bit like a helicopter, our daughter's nick name for them was helicopter mosquito :)
cheers

No, Uncleho [catchy turn of phrase :p] It was a black insect, resembling the mossies in every way in the photos except for the colouring. I am leaning towards a wasp of some kind. Will ask the Museum people, got me curious now Bob.

The world's largest mosquito is the Australian Toxorhynchites speciosus that can reach a crazy length of 1.5 in.
They are big enoug to cast a shadow.
In the poor countries to be used for blood transfusion on the blood banks.
