can you swap 4sp for 5sp ZF?

Last week spent a few days in Sydney and hired what I thought was to be a Toyota Camry... was given a 4 month old Falcon XR6 instead... now I've had Holdens for years, but I have to say that the XR6 was most impressive. The straight 6 engine with the 6-sp ZF...very smooth. A quick trip to Canberra, plus 100 km in heavy Sydney stop start traffic ..4 adults plus boot full of luggage..overall 7.6L/100km while the Canberra-sydney leg on the way home was 6.9L/100km...indicated on trip computer
Full refill prior to handing back gave 8.1 L/100km overall.

Got me thinking about the shortcomings of the 4spHP24 in my P38 and whether a 5/6 sp box might be a better towing box.

question: Ashcroft seem to imply that the 5spHP whatever ZF was less reliable that the 4sp HP24; but that the 6sp ZF is quite reliable..
so question is whether a 6sp ZF as fitted to the Ford Falcon might be adaptable to the P38 in place of the 4sp HP24...I'm assuming a warrantied one could be bought at a reasonable price...

You would have to get a controller for the gear box as it is certain to be computer controled. There are after market controllers so that would not be impossible to overcome. Don't know if you would require some mechanical adaptor plates and shaft adaptors (spud shaft I think they are referred to as).

I suspect that the size and shape of the vehicles would have a fair bit to do with the fuel consumption.

$5000 as a bare minimum i would have thought.
All these new Autos are pretty impressive in their operation it makes me think that all the automotive fuel efficiency improvements are coming via transmission technology and not through the engines.

It would be cheaper and easier to get a 5-6 speed manual gear box, possibly.

anything is possible depending on your budget. there are no adapter kits to the p38 transfer case and a recent enquiry on getting one made for a t700 was going to be 3g and another 1100 for the spud shaft.

I rekon it could be done! The question you need to ask yourself is - am I willing to spend the money to make it happen. I would imagine that a 6speed ZF would still cost you at least 5k, plus hardware, shifter, transfer adaptor, maybe modified drive shafts and fitting and electrical work required to get it going... I'd guess 10k.

If you found yourself a P38 for sale with a busted auto for really cheap (and the rest of the car was immaculate), it'd be worth it. If it were me i'd only do it if I didn't want to ever get rid of the car and it was done in conjunction with an engine conversion (say LS2 or LS3)...

I've seen the 5/6sp next to my 4sp when it was rebuilt. Hope you like elecs. Computer and elecs are in the pan. Different bell pattern, different ext housing pattern, different dimensions. You'd buy a good upgrade to necessary systems to make it tow better, plus a lot of rebuilds for the cost.

My rebuilder builds these for drag setups and even has one in his top alcohol car. CNC's his own bells and ext's, and he didn't wan't to know.

Of course the 6 speed in the Falcon and Territory is basically the same as the auto in the D3/D4/RRS.

I understand that the Bellhousing on a 2HP22, 4HP22, is removable and interchangeable. So the question may be "Does the 6speed have an interchangeable bell housing and is the bolt pattern on the front of the trans the same as the 2-4HP22?"
