Basic towing / recovery points

Disco 2A, 1994 build TD5 Auto

some help please, my search powers are weak.

We are going to be part of a group doing a long(ish) distance trip, some of us will be on bicycles :) from Cairns to Karumba and back to Cairns. Those of us going (we all live in Cairns) know the country well but its all in the preparation right.

We have a 2004 Disco TD5 auto and its standard. Has the towbar fitted and the usual tie down points (for on a ship etc...)

I would like some advice / pictures / link to thread about installing some better recover points / shackles etc

none of the vehicles going on the trip have a winch, but we shall probably have a hand winch. I am wanting to put on some better points front and rear so that another vehicle can extract us, or we can extract another if we are in front. Also, suitable points for long distance towing of us or another vehicle.

As for ropes, blocks etc, yeah, all happy with that, (used to sail Maxi's, Mini Maxis and other big sail boats)

I use a Bush Ranger receiver in the tow bar for rear recoveries.
And a Pair of Philco's on the front:D

Hi Mate,
I just bought some of Philco's recovery points (RP02) for the front of my disco and I just use the towbar (tongue removed and snatch strap attached to tongue pin) for the rear.

Philcos recovery points look good, I know most independant LR places have a version, ARB say off the record their bull bar has points where shackles can be attached for recovery, but the strain there is taken on the attachment between bar and chassis.I, too, have a fitting that slips into the tow bar assembly, but here all the stress is on a single pin.I am of the opinion now all recovery points should be attached to the chassis for safety reasons, better safe than sorry. Are you going along the Savannah Way? That would still be pretty wet, I imagine. Good luck, have fun, Bob
