Hey all, I just finished modding my D2's ashtray to be more "useful" (I'm a non smoker).
Super happy with the results. I've blogged it here:

I modded the ashtray into an iPod / iPhone dock to work in conjunction with my basic Alpine head unit that has USB & iPod support. No cables, no hassles, supports USB and Analogue (via Aux). I'm loving it! :D

Cheers

Wil

There are several sacred things in life. One of them happens to be another mans coffee machine. Remember this and you'll live a long and happy life.

Thats a job well done and a very useful modification.

One small word of advice though for people who might want to apply the same set up to the heavier i-Phone.
The male and female iPhone socket is not strong enough to withstand constant vibrations and movement on it's own. A support or drop-in cradle for the heavier iPhone would be a good idea to prevent any cracking of the connections as the phone rocks back and forth.
I recently had a similar problem with a drop in cradle that I purchased for my 3Gs iPhone. Luckily for me it was the soldered connections of the cradle plug that broke and not those inside the phone!

Nice write up too!
