View Full Version : HCPU tub trailer

righto its under way
i have had access to an on road camper, very basic i.e. not even tailgate yep access only by putting up the tent than raising the bed.
my next touring trip requires the need to carry 5 mountain bikes along with camping gear for 2 adults and 3 kids so i figured a 130 tub trailer will complement the 110 nicely.
draw bar/chassis - extra long to accommodate five bikes either lengthwise or cross wise and allow the back door of the fender to open while trailer is attached.
canvas - i will be using a rooftop tent on the trailer so that i can also pop it onto the roof of the fender when the trailer is not required
suspension - 850mm leaf
axle - non-braked custom using defender stubs and hubs minus the disc
hitch - undecided
i have the following
- aussie traveller deluxe RRT, picking this up at easter hopefully
- HCPU tub this weekend
- springs picked up today
- axle, stubs and hubs umm i will be surprised if it arrives tomorrow
- vin number, the easiest thing i have ever done at the QT
- manufacturers plate $4.60
i need to knock up a bull bar tradesman style rack to cart steel home this weekend
funny thing is i could have registered the trailer this afternoon even though its not even built and i probably will sometime next week or the week after
looking at the self assessment form for trailers one could argue that a 130 tub trailer cannot be registered in qld, good thing mine is un-braked therefore it doesn't have to be inspected or need a roadworthy
will post pics along the way
biggest headache is the frame to hold five bikes apart from each other but is quick to load and unload....three different bike lengths

I am jealous Weeds....I would really like to build a 130 tub trailer to complement my 130 truck...but I built an offroad trailer (with landrover wheels) a few years ago and just can't justify having two offroad trailers....
Are you going to mount the bikes on the drawbar? Having a long drawbar helps to balance out trailer as the wheel arch is forward on the tub. Have a look at Discowhite's build up in the trailer section.
This might be of interest.... http://www.tawayama.com/gear/trailer/chuckwagon.html
Looking forward to seeing those pictures.

I'm watching with interest. I have a camper trailer tent that I want to put on something and this would be a good project. Just out of interest what are the dimentions of the top of the 130 tub. My tent is about 2100mm by 1300mm so might overhang a bit I would think.
Cheers, David.

It's funny when we got the RTT I said to wife that I would prefer to have it on a purpose built trailer than having the normal camper trailer tents. A good option. Of course depending on the height of your trailer compared to the defender the awning walls may need to be adjusted or removed but you have probably already thought of that.

ok, axle and hubs picked up today
holly crap a 50mm solid square axle is heavy, anyways i had it custom made with flanges on the end to suit 110 stubs so that i could fit land rover hubs. M R were even kind enough to remove the discs for me
totally forgot i needed lock nuts and lock washers oh and wheel nuts

Hey weeds that 130 tub looks familier and that home made cover for the fuel filler pipe...( I made it )
You would now cry..... when i purchased that tub it was for the canvas hood on it and the bows.
The tub came for free.
There was another ten tubs and bows and hoods all new sitting in a paddock that got scrapped for the alloy.
They wete removed for the RFS to fit fire fighting bodies on the rear of standard defender 130s.
That tub stayed under cover at the side of my garage for at least 10 years.

Watching with interest Kelvin you have given me a few ideas for my next project.
Just registered a homemade box trailer today using the self assessment form, single axle with a ATM of 750kgs cost me $108.00 dollars took about 5 min and they didnt even come out and have a look at the trailer.
Longest part was sitting there for 40min waiting to get served :(

er, not sure what you mean
pretty sure i was only supplied two plates should there be a plate either side of the spring?
i thought i would only be drilling a hole into the axle for the spring to locate in it than the plate than four bolts
will a welded plate onto the axle sto pthe axle/spring moving

In your picture of bits which includes the springs. 4th in from the left just below the AULRO handwarmer are two square plates with a hole in centre. These are to sit between spring pack and axle, the hole allows the spring centre bolt to clear the axle.
I imagine you could drill the axle to clearance for the centre bolt, it would do very little to the overall strength of a 50mm solid axle! But it is more normal to weld that small plate on in position of springs.
The fish plate obviously then goes on other side of spring pack with UBolts to hold it together.

It folds forward over the fridge box and draw bar. That way you can enter via the tail gate area (which I have converted to a swing gate with kitchen attached) via a 3 step ladder. Works very well, you can even put up the tent whilst the trailer is connected to the car.

little bit of progress this evening
bolted the stubs on, used 10mm x 40mm bolts.....should have used 10mm x 30mm and it would have looked neater
cleaned and inspected the second hand hubs and bearings, all good so i greased them and fitted them to the stubs
i forgot to measure the axle prior to fitting the stubs damit, i can only imagine the engineering firm would have got it right, from memory i asked for 1370........its just looks like the 235/85/16 on disco rims are going to sit mighty close to the outside edge of the tub

Sorry. I'confused.
All roof tents I've seen have access from the folded out section. ie they fold out to back or side with the aid of the ladder (attached) and this is then how it is accessed.
So your access is obviously at the other end? Or both ends?

Perry,
Roof tents normally have a big flyscreen door at either end. It is just there is a ladder on one end you climb up. Once in, you can unzip the other end and have acces from the tent to the roof, if it folds out that way.
In D'ranged's case, the tent folds forward from the trailer axle over the drawbar. This is the bit the ladder is normally attached to. You then step up inside the tailgate at the other end and access via the other door.
In my case, my roof tent has an extended awning which covers the ladder section and you can zip a room onto. At lower heights you need to duck under this. Not so on alot of other models of roof tent.
Hope this helps

righto between getting kid around to their sports i have done some bits and pieces
i did have a mig organised to borrow but miss the boat, so back to the stick welder which i might leave it at that cause i have reminded myself my skills are a little lacking
a couple of hiccups
looks like the tyres will hang out past the tub, 10mm or so, either i provided the wrong measurement and the engineering company that welded it up got it wrong
and the grease nipples for the grease-able shackles are on the inside
any ways the chassis is done, will finish welding when i have the MIG
will place the tub on this afternoon so i can work out brackets etc
than work out how to individually secure 5 mountain bikes

Looking good kelvin,
I wouldnt stress on that 10mm too much, my guess is those springs will barely flex enough to let the axle move anywhere near the lip of the guards!!!!!
Ive found my new favourite trailer leaf springs this week. Helping a mate rebuilding his 4.5m makocraft trailer. We have used some 79series cruiser rear leafs, nearly 1400mm long eye to eye. With the two load leafs sitting on the concrete the 5 main leafs ride on a 750kg ish trailer almost as soft as coils and a four link!

found two Second hand BFG AT's
fellow forum member donated a disco rim
brought two spare tyre winches, buggered if i know how to fit them without losing ground clearance
seperated roof top tent from its base so that a zip can be installed and an awning made to go over the kitchen
registered the trailer
decided on the kitchen and the layout including water tank and fridge
whats happening today, between 2:30 and 5:00pm
chase up a new u bolt for the axle
drop tent off
drop tyres and rims off
pick up tow hitch
make plate for fitting the tow hitch
obtain various nuts and bolts

Looking good Kelvin,
If its not out of line... on an offroad trailer watch that chassis-to-Aframe connection. Many would argue not to weld across the top of the RHS.
Eitherway I would be gussetting/bracing that joint. It see huge loads.
Also If you had the steel I would run a diagonal back from where the Aframe ends to the front spring hanger. Effectively a diamond shape out to outer chassis rail back in to the springs. Will stiffen the frame, tie the A to the springs and seal up the RHS!
Looking good.

When I built my HCPU trailer I was advised similarly re "not to weld across .........the RHS" at critical load points.
Here's what I did -
Where the 'A' Frame meets the 'box' section - different design 'A' frame but same principle.
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2011/05/1408.jpg
and at the spring hangers
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2011/05/1409.jpg
Over 50,000kms and no signs of failure - just a repaint required after all the gravel roads and subsequent 'sandblasting'.
BTW, Nice buildup so far Kelvin.
Re those stabiliser legs, how does the adjustment work on them? I need to replace my rather lightweight ones with something more substantial and they look like they might fit the bill.

Halfway through a 10 day trip and all is good.
Got all the wiring done, I ended up using 7 pin trailer plugs between the roof top tent and the tub, will change this as I don't reckon the roof top tent will be coming off so I will be drilling a hole through the base of the tent and the storage box on top of the tub to hard wire the lights.
Re: lights, going to the extra trouble of of installing 2 way switches has been brilliant. I also got some Velcro sown into the awning so that I could stick a strip of LED lights to it along with a strip at the top of the tent to light up the down stairs and a strip above the pillows for reading etc. All these lights stay velcro'd when we pack up cause they are flexible and fold with the canvass. When the kids need to go to the loo a flick of switches under our pillows and the campsite is fully lit.......kinda cool
The LED strip lights in a pocket with Velcro on one side and clear plastic on the other were no cheap but given the lack of time they have been an awesome accessory.
The charger has been working a treat and you can see the load when the fridge kicks in and the going on/off.
The only pain we have is that we have to pack up the trailer when we want to go MTBing.
Outstanding jobs
1. Rewire lights to get rid of trailer plugs
2. Install 2nd aux battery
3. Make up a PVC pole tube
4. Install compressor
5. Install water tank and pump
Might have to think about getting new axle with some elecy brakes.

Update time
Just installed the water tank that was in the defender along with the pump.......only to discover it has a leak. I'm not keen on pulling it out to get it re-welded so hopefully i be able to apply something insitu. It on the top weld so I doubt I will loose the whole tank be any leaks are annoying.
I have the option of hand pump to the kitchen or 12v pump if I need pressure or want to fill a bucket quickly.

Over ride brakes are required when trailer is over 750kg
Full brakes are required when trailer is over 2 ton
Cheers

It was 4mm wall thickness on the 50 x 50 wasn't it? That's pretty beefy. What actually happened? Are there photos [tonguewink]?

yep 4mm.......no pics but its not as bad as I thought. I still need to come up with a fix and monitor
I might try and raise the tub (which will be a major) this weekend to determine the damage
it appear to have a slight bend the rear spring hanger....everything else seems to be OK
