Help!

I've got these great JATE rings for my Defender, but I can't make 'em fit!

I've balanced the JATE ring there for the photo only - but the steering guard arm is in the way and makes it too fat for the JATE ring.

What's the way ahead Land Rover gurus?

Do I bent the arm some more with a crowbar and try again?

Do I take the steering guard off and throw it at the next Toyota I come across?

Do I get someone to grind the JATE ring down a bit?

Looking forward to useful advice...

Genuine Jate rings are made to fit.I suggest a set of genuine rings.Also make sure that they are for a Defender,as the Defender rings are wider.
Grinding the Jate ring will weaken it.

Below is a link for the attached jpg. The wider JATE ring with the flats is 3.75 inches inside, the other, not shown below is 3.25 inches.

I almost think that single plate as above, double bolted to the frame is a better idea in that if then allows for a bow shackle to be attached. It does hang down a bit and does not rotate back however so that can be a bit of a disadvantage but everything has it pluses and minuses.

The Land Rover part number for the narrow 85 mm JATE ring is RRC3237

The Land Rover part number for the wider 97 mm JATE ring is ZXC9435

I actually think both rings start out as the same forging but the wider one is just ground out 6 mm on each side as I think the forgings are out of the same mould or whatever. The wider one then gets a different part number.

The genuine ones are forged steel? and appear to have a Land Rover part number moulded into one side. The jpg in my post above shows some markings that appear to be the part number RRC3237, and that is on the wider ground out ring, hence my thinking that the wider one is the narrow one, but just ground out.

I see a number of the forged rings on the UK eBay and think they are genuine but ... Some have the 10 mm bolts included, some do not.

I also noted a couple of Land Rover off road suppliers in the States that have them on their web sites but could not find an Australian website that indicated that they may have them.

Cost wise, eBay will be your best bet and as long as you ship by Royal Mail. You should then get them in perhaps three weeks. By FedEx or DHL, well maybe this year, and shipping will cost more than the rings.

Since you now have the part numbers, perhaps your local Wolf dealer has them in "old stock" at pre Australian dollar pricing in a plain brown cardboard box embossed with a coat of arms.:)

Hi Alastair,

I did the same as you and bought some narrow jate rings for my 110 wagon and then tried to fit them and realised they wouldn't fit. When i saw that the wider ones looked like they'd just been ground a bit wider on the inside i just did the same and ground them down a bit. Get a good cutting disc though as they're hardened and eat through grinding discs.

Mine now fit a treat.
