View Full Version : Ashcroft Locker fitted today

Got the 110 back today after it went to the local diff specialist for the pinion bearing replacing and the Ashcroft locker fitting.
I ended up having to put in new half-shafts, as the original ones are badly twisted:o. I considered putting genuine ones back in but in the end opted for the uprated Maxi-Drive (Hi-Tough) ones because of the extra stress that may be going through them when the locker is engaged.
The original shafts had done 60,000km. A lot of overlanding, not a lot of hard off-roading / rock-crawling. I was still disappointed to see this amount of twist.
Fingers crossed for long term reliability now!
As a side note, I asked the diff specialist guy what he thought of the Ashcroft locker - he said he thought the locker itself was much better than the ARB, but questioned the logic of the external plastic push-fit connector. I pointed out that Ashcrofts reckon this is a plus point because any pressure applied to the air pipe by twigs etc will simply pull the pipe out of the fitting rather than breaking the fitting - He agreed with the logic though pointed out if I break the plastic elbow then to get the internal copper pipe back out of the casing would be a major job.
At this point in time then, the Aschroft locker gets 2 thumbs up!

That plastic air fitting is a bit cheap. You can get stainless steel ones easy enough. In fact for mates rates of only $ 50 plus postage I`ll send you one :) Would last a bit longer. It`s good though that it is on the top side of the diff.

Thats some serious twist. the maxi drives will outlast the car mate. My maxi drives get seriously abused including extremely hard recoveries. They have proven themselves alot tougher than the diff centers. Although the hardened steel 4:11's have proven a joy to live with.

The plastic should last fine. But a replacement would only cost ~$5 in nickel plated brass or about double that in stainless.

Is it possible to locate the hose fittung somewhere where it would be more hidden or slightly behind the diff or a part of a diff guard mounting point. Else run the hose through the diff tube to one side and then up with the brake hoses. I'd use the brass fittings as if it does break the stainless would be a pig to drill out if it went that far.
Will be looking at getting one myself soon. Or do microsoft do a hoseless airsystem upgrade?

What was the pricing like from Ashcrofts? I'm looking at both the axle set and pair of lockers, deciding if UK or US is the go. Axles from US look like around $1100- or better as I'm looking at a big buy up.

I was in the UK for two days on a lay over, so dropped by, and picked up what i needed, lockers and stuff.
Locker is per the web site 450 GBP i think, claimed the VAT back at the airport, so shipping was not needed.
There's a company in Frinton on Sea SHE Marine who are good for shipping, i had a gearbox / transfer box shipped from the UK to the ME, 130 GBP all in, far cheaper then the US suppliers.

I'm looking at 2 lockers, F&R radius arms, shocks, towers, CDL lever, diff, steering and tank guards, long brake lines, woods F&R drive shafts, axle/cv kit, watts linkage & adj panhard rod. haven't finished the list yet though. So on that basis want to one stop shop and go hard on hammering a bulk price on both product and shipping. To ship 4 shocks alone from us was almost $300- as they are over std oacking sizes so I thought what the hell.

I doubt you will find a one stop shop to buy everything on your list.If you did buy everything at once, any savings you made would be swallowed up by the fact that you would have to Import duty and GST as it would b well ovr the A$1000 limit. And if you are after Woods driveshafts, you will have to buy from the U.S. as most in the U.K. use Bailey Morris drive shafts.

Clubagreenie split the order you may pay a bit more in postage but keep it under $1k per pack about a week or so apart and you will save on tax and duties.

Yes, thats what I'm shopping around for. Someone who wants the money and doesn't mind doing the little it takes to get it. The US looks a little better with the exchange rate. Plus theres some stuff I want that can only be shipped internally so I'll get it moved across country and shipped together.
