255/18 ContiCrossContact AT Report

I have the ContiCrossContact AT's fitted to the 18" rims yesterday (Thanks Gordon). I am pleasantly surprised at how good the car feels and drives on these tyres. The ride feels more compliant than on the 20" wheels and rims. I haven't detected any significant road noise increase either.

There is a slight difference in the feel of the steering but nothing adverse.

The next mission is to find a replacement for the 20" tyres given that I now have the 18's for the D4 the tyres for the 20's will be a 100% road tyre. My thoughts are headed towards the ContiCrossContact UHP.

Looks good! Just that little bit extra sidewall height makes the tyres look more practical and the open tread even more so. The RWC is practical too. I cringe at my 19s but will fix them within a day or so but a bit longer for a RWC.

I like the strong, rich colour - what is it? It fits well with the robust-looking rims.

I appreciate that these tyres max width is 255 but is there any reason why you did not go to a 265 width tyres or is it that you just like the Contis.

The colour is Rimini Red its seems more common on Range Rovers.

I have these on my D3 and agree they are a very good all round AT but you do need to be careful in rocky terrain as the sidewalls are soft and prone to cutting. I have had to change one tyre due to a cut after a day off road.

The first time I had the AT's fitted I did a weekend trip which involved some dirt road driving and after the first couple of km's I stopped to check if i had a flat as I could feel the tyre squirming as the tread blocks moved around on the ruts and undulations. Since then I have not noticed this, but do run then up around 40 psi now.

I put this down to coming from the conti UHP's which are a terrific 100% road tyre, excellent grip, no road noise and very fuel efficient. I find my fuel use up about 1lt /100km with the cross contact's on.

The Rimini Red D3 with black rims looks great, nice rear bar as well !

I had a chance over the weekend to test out the Conti's some more. First with the van attached. It seems to ride better with the van on the 18's maybe because the tyres have more flex.

Without the van attached we tried some roads with course surfaces with no real noticeable noise increase over what the 20's would have done.

On the way into the city today on wet roads and roundabouts there was a noticeable difference in grip this is certainly a weak point with the Conti's. It just means you have to change driving style to stay within the limitations of the tyres.

Over all I am very happy with the Conti's.

I had someone at an LR dealer tell wife she was brave to have them on the D3 as they had no grip in the wet ?

I personally have never had any problems with them in the wet or dry. I consider myself a reasonably aggressive driver but have always cornered the D3 with a bit of moderation noting it is a nearly 3t 4wd but never yet had the AT's let go on me.
