and just got a call to say my radiator was salvageable and came up really well for the grand total of $150..

25th December 2011, 07:43 PM
Merry Christmas All
I made a filter sock for my engine rebuild, using the foot sock from my wife's panty hose. By cutting them off about 6" long, poking them in though the radiator hose, them folding them back over the radiator hose pipe, then pushing the top hose over the pipe and panty hose, then clamping with the hose clamp.
This cough all the crud flowing around the coolant system hugh amount. I inspected it every couple of days and emptied the crud then refitted it, did this till there was a clean sock.
This worked very well.

Mike

CC dropped up and gave a poor boy a hand and we got daddy purring like a kitten with a cuddly.
amazing what can be done with a timing light, some feeler gauges and a big shifter!
re did timing, re did tappets, checked out CC's reaction time (there aint no shortage of spark i tell ya!) and tweaked the carby.
and away it went sounding like it should have all along....
CC was on his merry way about midday and i then tackled the fuel pump problem, which i sorted enough to get the truck running on the mechanical pump but delivery seems lower than what i would have expected so i would say i am going to have to revisit it shortly.
flushed the cooling system cleaner out of the system after an hour or so of running and letting it cool.. definitely not my favourite job [bighmmm]
onto the brake pedal tower and fitting a new lwb master cyl as well as cleaning up the area of the firewall in general.
put my newly acquired guard supports on the firewall so i wouldn't lose them, thanks arthur!

another 4 or 5 hours lost in landy world..
sorted some of the in dash wiring and got my ignition and spark back, phew!
wired up the new oil pressure switch from mr auto
soldered a couple of parking light wires
trying to diagnose the fuel gauge reading full when not ....
manufactured a heat shield for the back of the motor using some of the alloy from the damaged rear quarter i removed from the 4bd1 county...
fired the old fella up
and
it is official, it has enough horsepower to drag itself to the top of my driveway... (several times till the smile on my face subsided...)
handbrake still works, thankfully :p
temp side of the combination gauge functions as it should, just waiting on an oil pressure fitting to land so i can fit up the oil pressure side of the gauge.
tomorrow i hope to finish the dash wiring till i find some bulb holders for the late 2a speedo i have fitted (for the trip meter) bottom warning lights and i will try and sort the front bakes and wheel bearings so i can think about fitting the front guards.
scored a couple of l638 lens in excellent nick from the uk so i have two the same shade of clear...

Is the sender still matched to the fuel gauge? If you have them mismatched you will get that symptom. On mine I was wrecking a 2a so I grabbed the gauge AND the sender off it and used them as a matched set.

where do the hours go?
more dash wiring work including replacing the ignition switch with one of the spares i had... old key works fine even tho the numbers are very different :p
redid many of the soldered connection on dash fittings and replaced a few lugs.
tried to tidy up the wiring on the low side of the coil and dizzy, found a bad connection so the experience was positive (pardon the pun)
drove the old boy to the top of the driveway and gave underneath a really good clean up with the pressure washer.
refitted the pedal rubbers
started to refit the cowling around the gearbox and floor plates
painted a few small bits and cleaned up my work area.
another 10 or so hours vanished into the ether...

refitted alternator with machined pulley.. lines up lovely now!
fitted passenger side guard and finished the wiring to blinker and parking light only to find parking light has given up the ghost.. grrrrrrrrrrrrr
parker eventually sorted after i found a split fitting.
tried to fit the mudsheild under the guard.
no go..... series ii fit to the guard 4 or 5 inches closer to the firewall than a series iii unit... will have to make some from some ally sheet.
on to drivers side.....
fit electric fuel pump
well that wasnt much fun....
2 hours down the drain before it kicks into life.
fit the drivers side guard in record time, it all just fell into place...
bonnet aligned and fitted
fire it up and check all the lights still work :p

the MVCA meeting @ Brennan Park on Bribie Island
http://www.aulro.com/afvb/attachment.php?attachmentid=50077&stc=1&d=1345368717
got my good wife and i there and back with relative ease whilst serenading one and all with many high pitched noises from the rear diff.
in preparation for the trip i modified an lt95 gear lever boot to fit the lever on the toro overdrive. went well and beats the hell out of the thin leather boot that was there till now. fitted quite well in the end.
http://www.aulro.com/afvb/attachment.php?attachmentid=50078&stc=1&d=1345368848
also fitted the smiths heater while i had a second set of hands available.
the rear diff is very very sad and will be coming out this week to be swapped over with one of my spare units. (makes a good heater tho!)
Thanks pop for the assist! much appreciated as always!

busy day and a half spent on madge.
million other things i needed to be doing but i needed a spell from them, so..
started by pulling the back springs off to check the bushings etc and ended up swapping the back springs around and bolting them back up as things appeared to be relatively fine.
found a cracked shock absorber bottom mount plate so will need to order one of them when i get time
went over the front suspension checking things out and tightened everything back up and checked over the chassis for cracks etc etc.
and finally fitted the 140 decibel siebel horn i had tucked away.
fitted it with a fused relay and changed the wiring so the horn button makes an earth to the relay and doesnt carry a live load all the time.
is loud! is good!
about to have a shower and go for a casual drive to wind down ...

Hello from Harare, (but usually Brisbane).
I use Craddocks quite a lot and on the whole find their service to be pretty good. The way that they handle the 'miscellaneous export charge' as a separate order can be a bit of a pain if you don't know what they are going to charge when you are comparing different sources. However, you can email Penny or Jonathan in spares parts direct with the part numbers for a delivered price quote - then confirm the order number and pay direct through Paypal with that number in the comments box.
Week before last I ordered a set of Exmoor seats and a couple of floor panels and set of gaskets - they added the floor bits and gaskets to the original shipping quote (GBP60) for nil extra. Paid it through Paypal as described above. Arrived well packed as two parcels last Tuesday even though the shipping charge was just for one.
Great service.
Cheers

Hello again from Harare - beautiful morning but nary a Land Rover in sight. Unusual, because there are usually a few about the car park or streets. Heading east to Mozambique later on and will wait to see what the day brings on.
Anyway, I hope your order comes through OK. As I mentioned before, I have had a pretty good run with Craddocks - and all the rest of the usual UK suspects (Paddock, Island, DLS etc) too for that matter. Regular post can be slow - up to 5 weeks or so, but most of the priority stuff seems to take about a week or slightly less. Craddocks sent the seats etc through priority post in this last delivery, so I collected them at my local Post Office since they wouldn't fit on the Honda........
Cheers,

FYI
note the top rope instructions...
the care instructions that came with the tilt.
Tilt care instructions
Canvas is a natural product which will shrink and stretch. This hood has been made slightly larger to allow for this.
The hood will not OVER shrink as long as all four ropes are inserted into the hood and tied down tightly when you fit the hood to the vehicle.
Three of the ropes are laced through the sides and back flap of the hood and tied off. the fourth rope (the longest) is inserted through the fold of canvas on the inside where the back flap is stitched to the top of the hood.
It is very important is used and tied down securely.
Do not use the eyelet in the top of the back flap for this rope until the hood has weathered in. Once the hood has settled into shape the top rope can be threaded through this eyelet and tied off.
Do not leave the hood draped over the vehicle as this will lead to over shrinking.
Once fitted let the hood naturally shrink and stretch until it has settled. this normally takes about three (3) months.
Do not soak the hood with water, use a pressure hose or chemicals as this will adversely affect the colour and water proofing.
Once the hood has settled the side and back ropes can be changed to bungee cord but not the top rope.
It is advisable to re-waterproof the canvas every year after the first twelve (12) months.

well 4 years after getting the canvas tilt i have had to put it in to get the stitching redone on all the roof bits as the thread they did the sowing with has gone off
going to set me back about $200-$250 to get it redone in 15yr cotton thread.
put it in today @ ray's canvas in caboolture and pick it up in a few weeks.
will see how it goes as the canvas looks and feels fine.

sadly the oil seal at the back of the transfer case has decided tto leak after all these years so i'll have to sort that out in due course.
cleaned it all up and readjusted everything in the hope of keeping it going while i get the parts and the time :p

G'day Inc.
Check the nut 1" under the Uni joint that is the rear output shaft, should be at 80lbs on tension wrench, any looser it will allow shaft to float and that will give you a leak through the seal, also if the shaft has a slight groove at the seal "speedie sleeve"is your friend.[bigsmile1]

The bushes are replaceable, as are the seals. I don't know whether you can get replacement shafts or if they are any good if you can. Should not be too hard to find a S/H complete relay though if the spline is too badly worn, and overhaul it if necessary. They are interchangeable right through to the end of S3, so you shoould be able to find a much newer one.

If someone is about to throw a chassis with the relay rusted in place it isn't hard to get the shaft out, then fit that in your relay body. Better still get a S/H relay, overhaul it and swap it out with yours.
Bushes don't seem to wear that much but depends if it's had oil in it or whether it's been left full of water.
Locally I can get springs, thrust washers, gaskets, steel washers for under the spring ends & the split Tufnol bushes. I keep most of these parts 'in-stock' which helps my wife confirm that I'm a hoarder.
The bolts with undersized heads I had to get from the UK (I have seen cap head screws used instead).
Get seals from a bearing supplier rather than a LR supplier.
Not sure if you'll be able to get a NOS shaft, most will be aftermarket.
I've repaired 6 or 7 over the years. I've sometimes set the shaft up in a lathe and skimmed the seal land because of pitting (could use a speedi sleeve), never had a leak.
My Series I relay hasn't been overhauled. When the oil 'fell out' I dropped the bottom cover, fitted a new seal & gasket and put it back together......one day I'll get round to removing the top cover and replace the top seal (to stop water getting in).

If they have oil in them and the vehicle is used regularly, they seem to be pretty trouble free. My 2a has only had a few oil topups over the last 25 years!

Would manufactured tubular exhaust manifold (extractors) bolts suit this purpose? They have a head size one increment smaller than standard bolts. 7/16" hex head on a 5/16" thread, instead of the usual 1/2" hex head.

Dave, if you decide to replace the shaft , keep in mind that the original S2 'hollow shaft' relays, identifiable by the oil filler bolt on top , were produced with skinny 6.00/7.00x16 tyres in mind. Metal fatigue can strike anytime.

I knew they were small head, but I'm trying to remember - are they UNF or BSF? Or did it change? I can't imagine Series 1 is UNF. The 2a parts book I have only list one number for the bolt, 544337, which is the same as Series 3 (except Stage 1, which has a different number, probably metric).

kept mine topped up and don't remember it leaking but it sure does now and there is a fair bit of play in it
i'll try and source a decent second hand unit from a later model going by what i have read here..

Yes, but it may have spent long periods with out oil before you got it. Also, make sure that the play is actually in the relay, not the splines or the relay moving - the 1958 S2 I owned in the early sixties had problems with the relay moving due to wear on the bottom plate and its locating collar, leading to the tabs it was bolted to on top of the chassis breaking!

I believe S2's used the same special bolts as S1's ,thin head, slightly domed, part no 231299.

According to my parts books, both S2a and S3 use the same part - 544337 While quite possible that there are two different bolts for S3 (apart from the different one for Stage 1), it seems unlikely that S2 is different from S2a. Of course, it is possible that there are two numbers for identical or at least interchangeable parts. That happens.
I am beginning to think that perhaps the thread changed to UNF with Series 2, which was, I believe, when the first UNF went into Landrovers, and was kept through to the end of S3.

well that was easier to extract than i thought it was going to be!
hit it with some penetrating oil for a few days
then this afternoon i dropped the drivers side guard, the battery stand and loosened off the radiator support panel to access the thing
undid the bottom bolts, undid the top bolts and used a nail removal bar to lift it out far enough to let me drag it out by hand
three hours and it's out....
i was expecting to be in full hate mode for a week, after some of the stories i have read on here over the years [emoji14]
life is good! (so far)
