I agree, HF aerials. Are they autotune?

I believe so, they dont have the wind up and plug aerials fitted? but honestly I have no idea... just thought that and the other stuff going so cheap may be of use to someone

I think they look like the old "McCloud type" pre tuned aerials which have a up to 10 set frequencies with a bank of relays selecting the required frequency.

So are they worth buying? If they are I'd have one, I don't need 4.
Would anybody else be interested and do we have anybody over that way who could pick them up?

If the price was right, I could use one with my QMAC HF90 (I think). I have an autotune for my Codan.

On a closer look, they are tapered probably Codans autotunes. The McCloud's were straight cylinder type HF aerials..

They are different to my Codan autotune.
These are the ones for sale:

I was wondering if they were Barretts like this:

If you guys are interested in them, and someone wins them, I am happy to collect & store for you.... (bags the box thou...;) )
Just let me know.
Oh, BTW - I dont have an interest in the aerials, so I wont be bidding against you. :D

Pretty sure they are various incarnations of Barrett auto-tunes.
I'm in SA and I'll take 2 of them.
Is anybody else here planing to bid on them? No point getting into a bidding war. For the guys who have already expressed an interest, what is you highest bid for 1 antenna ? Either let me know here or via PM.
Keep in mind we don't know if any of these actually work, and I don't know what Barrett will charge for an overhaul if required.

I'm not going to bid but I think I'd pay $150.
I hope that I could overhaul one. Getting it from SA to Sydney undamaged might be an issue.
My wife will be in Adelaide next week but I think she might object to carrying one back on the plane.

Guys just with this,
I know that a large number of Govt storage places have to move before the end of 2011 due to asbestos laws set down for Govt buildings.
As such there are a lot of warehouses/Govt store areas clearing out surplus
stored stock etc
I am unsure if these are ex govt (I think SA Gvt uses Codan (SA Company) ) but I figured they are exceptionally cheap...as I said a lot are moving also now a lot of Gvt etc and business are moving to sat phone and disposing of HF (a silly move I reckon after being in far north with both you can keep your POS sat phones!)
my 2c.... a lot of gear will be coming up before the end of 2011 just being cleared out..

I am half expecting to be in Sydney just before Christmas. I could bring it with me then.
Auspost for the tuner shouldn't be a problem. The whip on the other hand....
Surely we can make something work with the AULRO courier service if you are in no hurry?

Thanks Pete.
No hurry at all. I still haven't got my Codan installed in the P38A and I've had it for years. I've had the QMAC HF90 for 6 months or more and haven't fired it up either.

Working out how to divvy up the goods does raise issues so before anyone starts bidding, let me make it clear what I want.
I want a grey one. If I can't get one of those, I'll drop out of the race.
If someone else decides to buy them all, I don't think he'd have any trouble selling off what he doesn't want.

If they are Barretts are they compatible with Codan radios?
I would take one (1) and pay up to $300 for it.

If they are Barretts are they compatible with Codan radios?
I can't give a definitive answer on that yet. My tech library only includes earlier Codan and Barret manuals at the moment. I am currently working on rectifying that problem..
I suspect they are. The trick will be the interfacing and getting the Codan to transmit the low power tune.
I don't intend to chase the bidding much above $150 / ea. Especially since we have no idea what their servicability status is.

Still not sure about interfacing to Codan gear, but I do have the service manuals for the 510. Will try and figure it out once the dust settles.
In an interesting turn of events it would appear as though the antenna tuners were (hopefully) pulled from fleet vehicles, along with the matching Barrett 550's and all the cables.
The radios were in separate lot numbers from the remote faces  but I was lucky enough to pick up all the lot numbers. :D
Now to actually get them in my hands and find time to do the factory check -test/calibration and see what actually works.
Is there anybody on the list with access to the Barrett 550 programming software ? I want to set up the frequency plan to have VKS737 and RFDS channels. Any others I should add ?

Jsp,
If he can track down a copy of the programming software I would be eternally grateful. Have managed the service manuals so far but the software is being a real bugger to find.
Cheers,

and the history and a couple photos of VET too! (lots of work involved in getting it up and about...firewall etc.,.. is a slow job but I'll get there!!)
Assume you and your father are marching on ANZAC Day, Hope you both have a great day! - have a coldie for me!
I finish 2.30am, down for dawn service (C.L.Gardens) then down to the city for march and straight back here for 4pm start work :(
Hope the aerials are good!!! (sorry for thread hijack!)

Many thanks to all who have replied here and in private.
I have sourced manuals and programming software.
Well on the way to being a Codan and Barret guru.. pffft :)
More to follow in a couple of weeks once I get my hands on the 'gear' and find out what problems are buried and waiting for me.

The jury is still out on whether I made a bad decision...
Of the four ATU's, two have busted casings and the sealing surfaces of the third looks ugly. Pretty sure one of the tuners is serv, but I don't know about the rest.
I have started looking into sourcing new casings but I have a sinking feeling they will either be stupid expensive or rare as rocking horse poo.
There isn't anything particularly hi-tech about the casing and one could probably be improvised with some storm water piping as a worst case.
I have to say though, I don't know what drugs the Barrett guys were on when they designed the 510. What a **** poor piece of mechanical engineering. The Codan 9350 housing is in a completely different league. Having said that, the electronics engineering is brilliant. It just needs a case that does not explode. :(

Turns out the only serv ATU, Isn't. Coax wiring that has fatigued from unknown hours of dirt roads. That one should be an easy fix once I get everything cleaned up.

Out of all the mess on my bench I have one serv set of Transciever / Tuner / ancillaries at this point. Still working on the other ATU's but I am not holding my breath.

Not sure if I mentioned it in the thread previously, but the 550 transceivers look to be ok. They all accept channel programming and drove the one functional ATU correctly.
After going around in circles for several weeks, I ended up sending the 510 antenna tuners to Barrett for an overhaul that should see them come back functional.
I have recently been offered an NGT at a very good price, so it looks like I will have two sets of 550 / 510 gear that just need a couple of supporting bits to make them complete, ie. microphones / RF cables / remote speakers.
If there is anybody looking for a 550 / 510 setup, please drop me a line. I am only looking to cover costs.
