Hi all.
I am planning in the next couple of weeks to hire an engine crane and swap the 3.9 from my old Rangie classic into the new family member the 95 Disco with a stuffed 3.9.I am hiring the crane for a weekend and would like to have everything in place ready to go so I don't have anything holding me up.I will be doing the rear main engine seal and the auto transmission front seal and o-ring with the transmission still in the car while the engine is out of the car and would like to know if they are straight forward or not and what tools or special tools are needed for the job.

Thanks for any advice
Shane

AFAIR easy once you are in there for the main seal.

I think the auto may be harder as when I had a workshop do my rear main, they found the trans was leaking and sent it away to a trans shop.

And they were experts( British and Swedish Narrabeen).

no specialist tools required..

I get the old seal out with the help of 3 self tappers an electric drill and a pinch bar

The auto while needing no really specialist tools will encourage you to swear a lot.

If it was me... I would be dropping the auto out as well and sending it off to be worked on...

Thanks guys.
Thought the rear main would be fairly straight forward. With the ZF auto I just thought that while the engine is out if it's not too difficult then I'd do the transmission seals that I can get to without dropping the box out and then I would know nothing is going to leak in there for a while at least.Any more words from anyone that has done this would be appreciated.
Cheers

should have clarified...

the reason I would be sending the box off to be worked on is not because what you want to to cant be done in situe but because if the box has got a decent number of miles on it doing the overhaul while youve got it all this far down makes more sense. Auto work is supposed to be done in a semi clean environment (IE a clean workshop bench, not inside the trans tunnel of the car) and can require some unusual contortions to do properly.

right of the top of the noggin to do the auto seals and gaskets you will need circlip pliers and gasket goop to remove the front pump housing on the box to get to the seals.

Thanks Dave
Comment noted and I am aware of the cleanliness needed to work on a transmission but the problem is that the only workshop I have to do it in is covered in saw dust from my house building at present.I also don't have the funds to send it off to get done.
