View Full Version : Retro Fitting the Touch Screen Display, e-Diff and Phone controls

Hi All,

I have been doing some thinking about how I want to modify my SE Petrol D3, it may well have been cheaper to option up 2 years ago though when I bought it.

I have seen some posts and links on the forum about retrofitting the phone controls to make the radio function as the phone with the controls on the steering wheel. I am giving this some very serious consideration.

I also have checked out the e-Diff retro fitting link on disco3.co.uk and think that it could possibly be done, but again the cost needs to be determined before going down this route.

My main issue though is if I was to do these mods then I would like to also fit the genuine Touch Screen Display to the alcove in the centre of the dash. Does anyone know the part numbers and indicative costs involved as I would like to be able to use the display as it was planned to when installed new.

To pre-empt anyone's thoughts of "what a looney", no I don't have more money than sense but am planning on some very serious upgrades over time, to the car as I am keeping it until either it or I pop off the perch, hopefully a very long time in the future.

Waiting with bated breath - so over to you.

Cheers

Dom:)

save ur money??? look on car sales and wait for a perfect d3 that allready has the things on that you want, then sell ur car an -upgrade-

the time-money and effort to change it all i cant see it been worth it:(

could be done, but worth it,, id say no:angel:

Have you bought an extended warranty yet ?

Thanks Neil, it hadn't even crossed my mind. I'll look into that also.

well, i've been wondering this too. So I'm ordered an original screen from the UK, and we'll take it from there.
i know functions like 4x4 info can be unlocked with the MCV 2 faultmate..

Guess we'll see.......

in an added twist, after reading your post i did some research on the e-diff.

the uk disco3.co.uk site has quite a few articles. It has the picture on the e-diff actuator ontop of the rear diff. Apparently it is the only way to tell for sure you have it.

So i had a look under my beast, and there it sits atop the diff housing !

Sweet...

Clearly worth checking for, I bought my d3 at a RR dealer and he had no idea it was on there..

here's the link..

have a look

A pleasant surprise!

The actuator can be seen from either side by peering over the top of the tyre when at off-road height.

Some SE's were shipped with the "heavy duty package" as LR refers to it. This would include the rear e-diff / locking rear diff. If you kept your original specifications page the car was delivered with, it would be listed there as well. Luckily I had to foresight to know I wanted it at the time of purchase.

It has been retrofitted into vehicles that it did not come with, it's a big project, due to wiring loom considerations. You can find a how to on the same disco site. Discussion link on the subject of retro fitting is here.. http://www.disco3.co.uk/forum/topic52473.html

I can supply a diff with 12mo unlimited mileage warranty should the need arise (or parts to rebuild your diff)

G'day

You can get the ex-factory spec off the Topix site, by entering your VIN

update. after much research, i think i have a couple answers regarding the screen update.

The first thing is, if you have the 6 cd changer stereo or above it is certainly possible with a few loom mods. I've talked to a guy that has done it.

4x4 info etc , does need to be unlocked in the car config file though using a faultmate msv2.

But as far as SAT NAV etc that is a go.

If you have the basic stereo, then it looks like you are scr3wed.. There is no optical lead or loom to supply the screen.

I did chat to a guy that retro fitted an entire wiring loom from a RR sport into his D3 and has enabled EVERYTHING. It certainly looks a major job, but he has made PDF's of the whole thing.

As for me, its gonna be as far as I go, as I have the really basic 1 cd unit in my car and NO looms to feed the screen.

If I was in the UK and could source a loom easily, I might have a go;)

It mean pretty soon they'll be a screen from a D3 for sale.

Gonna flog it for what I paid plus the import.... Intense sadness....

Let me know if you need some links, or just check out DISCO3.CO.UK - Dedicated to Discovery 3 and LR3 Owners and Enthusiasts (http://www.disco3.co.uk)

There are MANY nae-sayers but a few clever chappies have actually done the Job. The fella that spliced into the existing looms is from the US, I think. Very helpful.

Hi Doddsy,

I do have the 6 disc stereo and harmon kardon speakers so looks like it might be possible. How much for the screen etc?

Cheers

I can help you with the wiring, I have just done what you are trying to do !!!! It all works like a charm.
NO NEED FOR ALL THE EXTRA WIRING LOOMS!!!!! All it takes is being able to strip back a bit of the plastic covering on 10 wires from your factory loom, then splice in your own wires to the corresponding device.

I have added PTI, Voice Control & Sat/Nav to my 2006 D3 SE, thanks to the Faultmate MSV2. If you do not have a Faultmate MSV2 or can't get access to one, you can still get the Screen to power up & get the Nav to work but you can't activate the 4x4 info.

Do you have the six disc cd changer w/ amp under your seat? That is the only MANDATORY part, if you have that then I can help.

So looks like I've got a Used Genuine screen for sale $500

Thats what I paid for the part and import from the UK.

To Re-iterate, this CAN be fitted if you have the 6 CD changer.:D

Don't bother if you have the Single CD basic unit like me.

Hey Doddsy, any idea how involved it would be to upgrade from the single disc to the premium 6 disc stereo? I have the poverty stereo too, but I'm keen to retrofit a 2nd hand LR screen, mainly because of the neat fit. If I can't have it set up like it would be from the factory, I would consider a custom car PC, just not sure if I would be able to get the LR touch screen to talk to the PC...
