Well done!
A UK import model. I believe it has a 3.9 V8. Is the motor original to the vehicle or was the 3.5 replaced with a 3.9?
What is the grand plan? What do you intend to do with it?

Been reading up on 101's in James Taylor's excellent book called "Land Rover, 60 years of the 4x4 Workhorse" and I see the 101 was originally designed as a gun tower for the Pommy Army. Guess you will have to buy a 105mm Howitzer to make it a perfect pigeon pair, C!!:p Another bit of useless info ( and I guess you know this already) it is mentioned on page 186 that in Australia they played around with putting a Ford Falcon engine in the 101. Must not have worked out because they put the original 4.4 litre Rover V8 back in and sold it off. The vehicle was eventually scrapped in 2004!!:) This book is a goldmine of info on "Real Landies", not Range Rovers or Disco's or (sob:() Freelanders!! Cheers!!!

Ah, so don't believe everything you read!!!;) Maybe somebody ought to bring James Taylor up to date on the fate of that vehicle. I also read powered trailors and 101's, do not make a happy union!!Trials were scrapped on this combination!!! My assumption is the trailor was pushing too hard in difficult conditions making for nasty situations, like jacknifing!!! Would that be correct???

There was also a Scottorn Bushmaster powered trailer and Series III 1 Ton combination in Australia. Both prototypes bought out of the Rover Special Products factory, first saw it in 1974 and later the tractor in Alice Springs in the early 1980's.

Unfortunately the owners of the tractor didn't know about the trailer and thought the drive coupling was only a PTO unit.

PeterP (A fellow 101 owner who lives not to far away, thanks for the help) came over today to help sort out the wiring, there is some confusing stuff happening in this truck, so we sorted what was what and it seems the Black Out switch has issues:( which hopefully will be fixed shortly.

We rewired the 12volt system from the inverter so when it goes to the Gas place on Monday he has everything there to bring it back to petrol as well as gas, gas only ATM.

Misguided 2 with a petrol tank over and behind the rear diff is a excellant set up as it has both good petrol and gas capacties and the whole thing can be well executed without taking up room in the tray by placing the gas tank in the original petrol tank position.
My 101 is kind of the reverse with a smaller between the chassis rails tank behind the rear diff, but I can carry extra petrol beside the winch in a jerrycan.
But I usually carry a water jerry there, as I have the two jerrycan holders on the rear corners too.
The space between the winch and LHS rear wheel has a tool box to carry winching gear.
This tool box has a space behind and above it to clear the winch cable for reward winching and to the rear is where I normally leave my cable (so others can follow :lol2:)
I pull about 160 to 200 ks out of a 63lt water cap LPG tank......I dont know what the useable capacity is.
I find the 160 km min on road range will get me from one LPG servo to another on the East coast no problems.( I find most trips I do in my 101 is well under 160 km and it is only on special runs , rallies , events I ever need more LPG range.)
If I need more I just use the petrol to fill in the gaps and still have a long range without loosing space in the tray.
I find in the real world with the overdrive I can sit on 90kph at 2200 rpm and get good fuel burn.
Driving in sand in 40 degree c heat with bar treads and any though of fuel economy just goes out the window either gas or petrol.

101 Ron
22nd May 2011, 08:55 PM
To loose the rearward winch capacity I think would be a mistake.
The winch on the 101 is a good when it is understood its strenghs and weaknesses.
Winching from the rear opens a whole new world which people with front mounted winches will never realise.
Trailers can be loaded with a rear winch , or a trailer winched up a hill separate from the vehicle and it is really nice to know if you drive into the poo , you can get out the same way you got in by your self.

While I am at it the 101 winch has less chance off doing damage if overloaded by mistake( sticking overload clutch) or on purpose winching from the rear.( been there done that )
Winching from the front the cable goes though the two pulleys just behind the LHS front wheel which will bend under a overload.( like forgeting to disenaging the winch PTO and driving off )
Also this winch will drag the vehicle as a whole sideways off a tree or just the front or rear( no tirfor required)

A dremel is used to make V's where cracks are then filled with resin, sanded back undercoated and painted in 2pack:) My '63 wheel is proving to be a little tougher to do because of the wire spokes.

cheersAre you talking about the "regulator" disk or what ever it's called. In a lot of vehicles it is made of rubber and gives a feel to the pedal. The harder the disk the harder the pedal and with a hard disk you are more likely to lock the brakes early.

A booster overhaul company in Sydney's Silverwater had some made up for PBR boosters in Holdens and they proved too soft so had others made in a harder compound, in the mean time he used the soft ones in another model that had a habit of locking up the brakes, with excellent results.

G'day Mick_Marsh :)

No boost, and a very "Clunky" feeling pedal, it was about 10 years ago so I have forgotten what it was like exactly, but I remember it was very morris minor like :( (very hard pedal very little workie) T

The disc was suspected to have been snapped whilst being bleed, so it would possibly been from stomping on it (full pedal movement) when little or no hydraulic resistance.

Looking good

I've been hinking about colours lately for my beast. Original plan was the standard DBG with the right bits galved as if it came from the factory but I have been toying with the idea of getting it done in a metallic bronze similar to what the recent limited edition defenders came out as. Only problem is that I cant figure out what the canvas colour should be to make it work. Missus is telling me I'm being daft though, and to stick to my original plan :p

No problem. I'm going to have a look tomorrow so if it is an ex army unit I'll post up appropriate details. Just as an aside, are they particularly popular with landy enthusiasts? I saw a few sites that all said the model was a failure hence the low numbers. As they are more the size of a truck than a landy series they would only appeal to a small percentage, unless of course military.

bugger the rivet counters, it looks terrific.

if i had known earlier i would have suggested some flex agent for the canvas painting, we use it sometimes to soften aircraft fabric coatings, especially with two pack paints.

No, They are designed for the rear only:) And hh called you a naughty word because you have a couple:p that's lockers and 101's;)

Thanks to Lotz-A-Landies and bacicat:D I have got this thread moved to the 101 forum so I can update it:D

A box arrived from GBR in the U.S. the other day:D We now have a Detroit Locker and a few other things.

"herc" has been into the Gas place and was fitted with a button that you press when cold that puts Gas into system under preasure. This seems to have solved the starting issue as it has started every morning since:D

Mrs hh:angel:

Ah! That explains why I've not seen this thread before... Where was it? Great build up and pics. Hope Herc had a good wash after his dunk in the sea! Re lockers, we can allow Mick 2 lockers.... He does have 3 101's after all!! There can't be many left at GBR now as there's a few that have sailed this way of late! AJ has some new style ARB lockers that he's had broached out to take the 101 front shafts if that interests you... I'm still thinking about buying a Trutrac for a Salisbury and having it broached out if possible! Good to have another 101 thread to follow! :)

an update..

Brake booster taken out and the apportioning valve, the master cylinder and slave cylinder as well all fixed with MUCH expense  HH is overjoyed his 101 will be stopping well.

Just as well I own several Landys ;)

Mrs hh:angel:

hint don't get a 101 slave cylinder resleeved:( mega expensive

When you say slave cylinder - what exactly do you mean? The clutch slave cylinder ($75 for stainless sleeve) or something else.

What did you do with the rear apportioning valve as, as you appreciate these are a pain.

It does feel good when a plan comes together :) - well done.

I think Mrs. HH meant the brake master cylinder.
I had mine done. I didn't think it was that expensive.

101RRS
14th November 2013, 09:36 PM
It was just on $300 to have the mastercylinder resleeved and rekitted and to have the booster rebuilt.

I have to agree though about brakes and cost. When I was getting my 101 back on the road the single most time consuming and costly item were the brakes (and clutch hydraulics) as they required a complete rebuild - the only thing that had me stumped was the rear load apportioning valve that was knackered and was just too expensive at the time so I modified an old landrcruiser one to fit. Considered removing it completely or putting in a a manual operated valve but the lamdcruiser one seemed to work OK.

Yes sorry guys, my wording wasn't very good. The whole lot got done for around $600.00, App valve, booster and master cylinder.

$600 for the whole lot seems pretty good to me!

New discs; re-bonded shoes; some seals; reconditioned calipers, and three hoses, cost me $900 for my Alpine.

At least with re-sleeving and yearly fluid changes, you won't have to bother with them much again,

Cheers Charlie

on mine after a bit offroading the rear apportionng valve would always stick making for some tail sliding moments..the fix was a few hard stomps on the brake.

Are you going to re-install one in your rebuild?
Why, why not? What issues would you expect? I would have thought under heavy braking the rear wheels would lock. Great for handbrake turns without using the handbrake but, I'm not sure you'd be wanting to do that sort of driving n a 101 or would you?

I'm really not sure what to fit to be honest. Part of me thinks it must have been fine for po but then I think the factory fitted them for a reason!!!

Yikes! A friend built a 90" coil sprung Lightweight years ago in the UK... He left the restriction valve for the rear brakes out... It ended upside down in a ditch about 3 months later. I know mine is ceased, as I couldn't get brakes at the rear for the pits visit... One tap with a punch and I now have good rear brakes on the black top, but as Mick says, if I stand on them on the dirt, the rear locks and is really keen to do some overtaking!!:). I'm looking at fitting a later Land Cruiser unit, or pulling mine off while the diesel goes in and seeing what's needed.. You'll need something for sure! HH's, how good are your rear brakes with no load?

The ho har's
21st November 2013, 05:08 PM
Rear brakes with no load doesn't happen very often as we use 'herc' more as a camping/touring vehicle that anything else:) You saw him in S.A. pretty loaded in the back;)

Booster/master cylinder and apportioning valve is back in, suitable swearing from hh, now we have to bleed the brakes. Next trip, off with SLOw to Blackbutt for the weekend:D

I find it easier to remove the complete pedal assembly.

Last time I changed a Servo the master was unbolted and eased out of the way so the whole thing could come out.
Bit of a pain getting the pedal assembly bolted back to the front panel, but easier than trying to do it all on the vehicle.

The ghostly 101 is being driven down to the 4WD show in Quenbeyan - Feb 1st/2nd... It gets picked-up from there and taken to it's new home on Feb 2nd. The VIC plates should arrive within a month from that...

We are back from our weekend away:)

When I get the video footage of 'herc' playing with the other Land Rovers I will post it:D

On another note, 'herc' played up a little:( We would be driving along then there would no throttle, like he was flooding  hh kept pumping the accelerator then he would come to life and away we would go. He wouldn't run on petrol at all. Happened several times. We think it may be electrical.

A club member is a electrical engineer, they took the engine cover and drove around with a multimeter on the coil to look for voltage drop and he didn't miss a beat.
We drove the 100k's home this morning and 'herc' ran beautifully

I asked Harry if he fiddled with any wires, which he said no.

Any ideas??? We need this sorted for Corowa.

Mrs HH - apart from the bit about it not running on petrol, the problem with Herc seems remarkably close to one I had with Garp - that got steadily worse until I just stopped at a traffic light.

Land Rovers and pets - designed to be an embarrassment at any opportunity!

In my case it was a badly fitting low voltage connection on the coil. It would be fine for days and then just die, run, die, run...

In the end I discussed it with the serial disser in the post above, mentioned what I had discovered when it died at the lights and changed my mind from a possible fuel problem to an electrical one.

Rather than use the easily dis-connectable crimps on the coil wires I now have lugs on there and the wires are bolted to the coil.

No problem since.

PeterP came over the other week and helped hh to sort the coil wiring out :)

Seems the fuel pump only worked occasionally :o

Brand new plug leads, a fuel pump ratted from a RRC :)

The plumbing to the radiator all sorted with new Stainless fittings :D the old metal looked very dodgy:(

Running on petrol and gas, sweet as now :ehigh5:

I am now feeling a bit more confident on the long run to Corowa :)
